I think there was a previous thread about Buffy books but can't seem to find it so I've just started a new one (this one is only about the Queen of the Slayers one anyway).

I bought this book for my summer holiday just after watching S7 of BtVS and wasn't quite expecting what I got. I remember people saying how it wasn't true to the series and I kind of have to agree. The whole storyline seems ridiculous and the fact that it tries to bring up as many old moments as possible also seems out of place. I enjoyed the fact that it crosses over with S5 of Angel but it seems to be lacking in something and it left me dissapointed with the whole book really.

I was mainly wondering, did Joss and co. actually create this storyline? Or was it just strung together to fit in with S5 and cash in on the Buffy brand name? I can't help but feel that maybe they shouldn't have tried to continue the series when it ruins the image created at the end of S7 (how everything was going to get better and that they had hope). What does everyone else think of the book?

Joss has said he stays away from the books (including the Serenity novelisation) for fear of getting too involved.

The tie-in novels are completely separate from the actual show and Joss doesn't control the books whatsoever. Joss gave his okay to a few storylines in the current Angel comics, but that was only to make sure no one would take any storylines he still wanted, and they're still not 'official' show stories. But as far as I understand, the books are things Joss stays completely away from.

Ah, so should you basically ignore what happens in Queen of the Slayers and just think of it as someones interperetation on what they think would happen next? Things like

the splitting up of Willow and Kennedy and Gunn's death

were major storylines and if they weren't actually intended then I'd prefer to forget about them.

Right... Joss doesn't have any say or editorial power with the novels. The publishers and writers do their own thing without him involved at all. The only things that are official are what's written by him, or things he's gotten other people to write for him. And Queen of the Slayers ain't one of those.

If he does anything 'for real' it'll be in comics... like the upcoming Buffy season 8, which Joss will write some issues and others will be done by different writers using stories Joss assigned them.

I have to say I really didn't like the book. It struck me as being more like fanfiction than a part of the Buffyverse. Not just the break ups and make ups, but that ending? Sooo fanfictiony.

Quite a lot of the Buffy books make "mistakes" since they aren't canon. One of the big ones is in the Lost Slayer books, where characters assume that Buffy will be replaced if she dies. In fact, she was already replaced, so there won't be another new slayer when she goes.

****season 5 Buffy spoilers****

Hence the reason why Buffy wasn't replaced after the season 5 finale.

Another book that makes a mistake is 'Pretty Maids all in a Row', which wrote about Spike's past and has him killing different slayers to the ones shown in the season 5 episode 'Fool for Love'. It got the potential-slayer thing mostly right though.

Joss is writing a comic about what happened after 'Chosen', so we can expect that one to be canon
