You know there is a line in Earshot, when David says "I'm a funny guy." And we all said, "Yeah right!" Mopey, brooding Angel is not funny. But out from under the shadow of Buffy, he really blossomed. "Angel" was actually sexier darker more adult AND funnier than Buffy.

The scene in the first cross over, when Angel is human and starts eating everything in sight...I have never laughed so hard.

Yeah, I'm not personally a fan of Angel either. I've only seen the first and second seasons, but so far while I enjoy it well enough to keep watching I don't like it nearly as much as Buffy or Firefly.

And yeah, I think I like the character of Angel less on Angel than on Buffy. I dunno something about the second season... eh. I'm hoping the third will be better.

I think Angel, as designed, just works better with Buffy around. Or Spike (see S5 of Angel).

I nearly hated Angel when he was still on BtVS. He was pretty much useless most of the time and personally I hated his relationship with Buffy. It was just creepy. But I grew to love Angel on his own show. He's broody and kind of a bastard, but he has a lot going on with him.

And I personally loved AtS season 2. I love him most when he's morally ambiguous. And as an actor, David Boreanaz had great chemistry with Julie Benz. Then the 'chemistry' thing nearly blows up when he has scenes with James Marsters in season 5. I guess Angel just goes crazy around any small blond person.

Though my favorite parts of 'Angel' are usually the other characters and not necessarily Angel himself.

I guess it's to each as their own. I love the Angel character. The Angel series focuses more on his journey toward redemption. He became a more believable character on the show. He matured and yes he's a vampire & we are not supposed to see him "grow" but I just overlook it to watch his growth as a person.

He was broody, he was flawed, he was very "human" on his own show.

All I ever saw of him on Buffy was "hunky" & "heroic".

I can't relate to that.

But the grayness, the despair, the "trying" to do the right thing and it now always working right. The times of genuine sacrifice, the times of weakeness & overcoming that weakness, that's what makes Angel for me.

The long journey from here to redemption. I guess it's why I love our Captain & why I love Angel so much.

Though I will agree I love his chemistry with Spike. Very "brotherly"

Being a Buffy fan from way way back, I am still very attached to the idea of Angel who needs Buffy in order to effect his redemption... which is why I still find it hard to get into the later seasons of Angel, much as I apprciate their artistic merit.

I'm a sucker for the concept of eternal, redemptive love in fiction, but it makes me want to vomit in real life. Go figure.
