Doyle, Kate and Lindsey

I enjoy shows that bring back characters who have been absent for awhile. This device, when handled correctly, provides an excellent yardstick for measuring change in the various characters most effected by the return of the character who had been gone.
The return of Oz (in BTVS) and the return of Darla (in Angel) stick out in my mind as the best examples of usage of this device in the Buffyverse. Oz came back and his return provided one of the best episodes of BTVS S.4 expanding the dimensions of Oz, Willow, Tara, even Riley all in one swoop. Darla's return led to an entire story arc that strengthened both the Darla and the Angel character immensely with a trickle down effect on the rest of the ensemble.
Though I count myself among those satisfied by where the Angel storylines have gone and are currently headed, I was bummed when they offed Doyle so early in the first season. I've been watching my tapes of Angel season one and couldn't help but think how it might be fun to dream up interesting ways to bring Doyle back. Just for an episode or two, mind you.
Are there any non-cheesy ways to accomplish a return of Doyle? The only one I can think of... why not make him one of the PTBs? He died honorably. I know a similar thing is planned for Cordy's character, but...
And whatever happened to Kate? I can't recall how (or if) she was written out of the show. It'd be great to see her again. The return of Lindsey would be welcome too.
