I don't really know if this applies, but Dave Lister from Red Dwarf. He's slobbish, disgusting, rude, but somehow you become endeared to him. Or maybe just I do, I love his character! Ummm, I can't think of another at the moment. Maybe John Crichton from Farscape, he actually quite reminds me of Mal, but in a different setting, and with aliens
He's not exactly a criminal but he's always getting into some sorta trouble.
*Edit* I see I got beaten to mentioning Crichton.
