I wish for Star Wars television

I know the recent Star Wars movies are getting a bad rap. In any case, George Lucas says Star Wars is over after Episode 3.

But I'd like to see a Star Wars TV show, or a miniseries. I really like Jedi's and lightsabers.

I think Joss should do it, or at least write it. Besides Firefly, there's nothing I'd rather see more than Joss Whedon and lightsabers.

Joss could provide what the new S.W. movies have lacked: Characters with personalities and good dialogue.

It's okay to dream, right?

Considering that there is 25,000 year's worth of story in the Star Wars 'verse I think a TV series or miniseries would be a good idea as long as someone else does the writing and directing. George is a good visual director, but when it comes to character developement and story telling, he has a long way to go.

Not that I don't think he would do a terrific job with it, but I don't think Star Wars would be Joss's cup of tea. In all of his shows, the characters mock their own roles, play with stereotypes, and tend to have shades of grey.

Star Wars, on the other hand, IS the part (a big part in fact) of the convention that Joss likes to make fun of. They are almost always straightforward architypical characters (with the exception of Yoda's introduction in TESB) and everything is good and evil, black or white, light side or dark. It also takes itself pretty seriously (there was no witty banter between Luke and Vader), which Whedon shows almost never do (Mal even cracks wise while Niska tortures him).

Again, I'm sure he would do a fantastic job writing it, far better than Lucas (hell, I could write better than Lucas at this point) but I just don't think it would be making full use of his talents, and I doubt if he'd enjoy working on someone else's creation for very long.

A Star Wars series would be fun though. The problem is that, like with the abomination that is Star Trek: Enterprise, you'd run into all kinds of horrendous continuity problems, no matter when you set it. Oh, and one of the only things that bothers me about the Star Wars universe is that they supposedly have had hyperdrive, blasters, lightsabers, etc etc for 20,000 years... that's a hell of a technological stagnation for such a diverse and advanced universal society. And then idiot authors write books where they've invented a new superweapon every other day. That just doesn't work. You'd have that same problem in a TV show.

It would be great if somebody could write the real origin of Darth Vadar, instead of this hardy boys/rebel without a cause schlock Lucas is producing: "I always knew Darth Vadar was just a whiny teenager with a god complex! That's the reason I've loved Star Wars all my life!"

So we can't make it about Vadar, just set it 10,000 years in the past and give the guy a different name. I totally think Joss would be up for writing about jedis and lightsabres, the only thing is he'd need total creative control and George isn't about to give that to a living soul.

Hey, have any of you guys seen the Clone Wars mini-mini series done by the animator who makes Samaurai Jack?

It's brilliant - and way better than either of the two movies! This series, I would love to be extended to be a proper series.

Star Wars tv? Might have been a good idea, if the franchise wasn't so old and sold-out. I wonder if Lucas would have been more successful with a trilogy of movies showing what happens after Return of the Jedi as opposed to the prequel trilogy. Obviously the thrill of Star Wars is fading fast to a nostalgic past.

Yeah, it is kinda lame how that keeps happening. "Guess what? Yet another galactic crisis!" You just gotta assume that because of the chaos in the galaxy, with the Empire falling and all, all of the nutcases finally launch their crazy schemes. One good series is the Han Solo trilogy, because it's a lot less black and white, with a lot more grit.

I don't think that Joss would be the right person to direct a TV series, although it would certainly be interesting. TV shows are in the brainstorming area right now, after the Cartoon Series was successful this past fall. I imagine that a 7,8 amd 9 will also be seriously considered.

As for the books, the superweapons are largely limited to one author, and that was when they seemed to be running out of ideas. Their clone wars stories are outstanding though.
