You know... I think you've got a really good point there. Even if it's totally suck-tastic (and here's hoping it isn't,) the Star Wars show is surely going to be bringing in the ratings. And it's a given that if one type of show is doing well on one network, everyone will want to capitalize, as you say.

And what better franchise to compete against SW than Firefly???

This bit of news is actually the best hope I've heard so far. Sci-fi & firefly is a natural combo here in the states.
I keep coming back to the evolution of SG-1. If I'm remembering correctly, SG-1 was on the WB network for the first 5 years eventually repeats were aried on the Sci-fi channel, then presto, sci-fi started producing it.
If Sci-fi is airing firefly in primetime there has to be a plan for something bigger to come assuming the #'s are there to back it up. Which of course they will be.

After all it's not as tho Joss isn't a proven $$ maker.

Just for nitpicking-

SG-1 was originally on Showtime which makes showing the first seasons problematic on basic cable without some editing...

Anyways, for Sci-Fi to get Firefly for new episodes 20th Century Fox has to give up the rights first. That has not happened. The only thing that has happened so far is that 20th Century Fox licensed the existing 14 episodes to Sci-Fi for airing. So that means that Sci-Fi can only air the 14 episodes and doesn't mean that they can make more episodes. So 20th Century Fox can sell the rights to NBC Universal (which owns the Sci-Fi Channel), or make more episodes and have them be turned down by their counterpart (Fox Television Network) and thus allow a bidding a war for whatever other channel wants to try to pick it up, or Universal Studios can make more movies. As long as a studio is willing to make it, a channel is willing to air it, and advertisers are willing to endorse it then there is always a chance but we have to find those three combinations first and offer up the numbers to make it worthwhile (either in money or people) for them to make a show.

Thanks for the correction. I missed the first few years of SG-1 so wasn't sure of the time line.

Agreed, Rklenseth, the key is for FOX to sell it's rights. So...how's Fox's financial situation? Does anyone know what Fox's reaction has been with regards to selling?

Fox would most likely rent the rights for a limited period of time rather than sell - gives them leverage if the show were to take off.

All I know is that Ace Underhill was in contact with the right people at Fox, but no decision yes or no had been made. It was clear from my point of view, that Joss would have to be involved in the decision whether to allow the transaction to continue.

Regarding Fox, I'm pretty sure they don't need the money. That company, to my best knowledge, is owned by Murdoch, he's one of the richest media moguls in the world.

I suspect people don't get to own as much media as that (Newscorp) by being being really nice, kind humans. But what would I know?

His son was in the news recently, quit working for Daddy. I suspect (undoubtably incorrectly) that he quit over the Firefly debacle.

OK, I know that's not true, but it comforts me sometimes.

I'm new to the whole Firefly/Browncoats deal, but my fire is newly lit and fresh and very eager to do my part. But I waswondering what sort of things browcoats have done aside from sernity day? Like have we done same day mass mailings to Fox/Sci-Fi? Or anything of that sort...I just am not sure what we've done and and what more we have planned to do.
