Yeah but if you look at the religions of the world, most of which are exactly the same when you get to the core, most seem to say, don't be an ass and be nice to others.
I mean when Jesus said that a Samaritan could be a good person you have to remember that Samaritans worshiped in a very different way and were not on good footing with the Jews.
He's saying, "Your enemies can be good people," and he's not alone in it. Though I will yield that Judaism is violent and warlike when that violence is in the name of religion it only seems to be against heretics, not heathens.
Most of the time anyone killing in the name of god is disobeying whichever god they are killing in the name of so it can't be the belief in god that is the problem. The problem has to be something else. I think the problem is people.
I mean let's say you believe in god, what does god do, he she or it goes around saying to people, "Hi, how are you? Listen. Be good, here's the version of the golden rule best suited for your people, here's a parable or two, be nice." And someone says that stuff to the people, and then a generation or two later they’re killing each other over the spelling.
Let's say you don't believe in god, then someone hallucinates god saying the exact same thing.

I have a feeling that something real and tangible would have the same effect as the words, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Which is to say nothing. Nothing at all.
No change, just different reasons for killing each other.

To change the world you need to change people, to change people you need them to want to change, god is as good a way to get them to do that as any.

I don't kill people, but if history is any indication I'd say social cleansing is the reason most often chosen. New records have caused us to reevaluate the number of gypsies killed in the holocaust (much more than we thought), no one talks about them though, no one likes them.
Trade unionists and such don't get much talk either.
But they do die quite often.
All in all I'd say the desire for land, power, and desire for a utopian society free of all "lesser" people and trouble makers are reasons for killing more often than religion.
