lol. wow. as a 17 yr. old i know that mothers are very scary sometimes. but really it is way cool that you went in there. my own mother is way to freaked out my the goth culture-not that she is cool enough to be a firefly fan...having worked in a place like hot topic-i love when older, not goth culture come in and are part of something. it means a lot. people in hot topic are generally way cult-like based and know their stuff, its great when you meet another browncoat in an odd place. your kids will remember it...

It is always annoying when someone judges another based on clothes, but it is also interesting to see who does not.

My sister once wore almost exclusively black, sometimes clothing that she had made herself held together with safety pins (it's not that she couldn't sew, she just liked safety pins), a dog collar, so on and so forth.

She wasn't actually goth, but when you're just looking at someone how can you tell? (Personally I can't even tell after a conversation.)

It seemed that old women, and I mean old, grandmothers and such, were the ones most accepting of how she dressed, and interested in her hair.

I guess it makes sense, a grandmother might have grown up in the twenties, that was a pretty loose time. A parent of today comes from a more uptight generation, or was a hippie, either way. My parents were hippies, I think, they don't talk about it, but I have photos and my dad was called, "an Instigator, organizer and agitator," though he maintains he never organized anything.

Stereotyping is fun. Actually it's not but when talking about social trends across decades it's the only way to make any headway. You just have to remember never to apply a trend to an individual.

I had pink hair in college and wore my clothes inside out....I'll definitely not be throwing stones at anyone or censoring my daughter very much when she is old enough to dress herself (she is 2 now). As long as she is clean and clothed appropriately for her age (meaning ENOUGH clothes for her age), I'll be fine with it.

My grandma bought me my black motorcycle jacket (MC) way back when. My parents wouln't because they were horrified at my rebellion. She never cared about my black wearing or overall weirdness & usually loved my weird looking friends too.

My grandmother was nice enough to just let me have my weird friends. I think after two years of me barly leaving my bed room she was just happy I doing something. She only told me she didn't trust those wierd kids with the piercings and oddly colored hair when she was angry with me.

Just goes to show what a diverse group we Browncoats are! It's really refreshing to read this thread. Back in March, there was a screening of Serenity and I finally got to meet a bunch of folks from the local Yahoo newsgroup. I probably would have never met them otherwise. Some of us have become friends, not just fans. Shiny!
And, yes, we're gonna misbehave June 22.

This is so funny! Just yesterday my youngest daughter, she'll be 17 on Tuesday (yes, I know the date!) reminded me of the times that I literally had to be dragged into Hot-Topic by her older sister; and now, I'm the one who runs in to check on t-shirts -- for myself!

And yes, the kids that work at the various stores that I have been to are always courteous, helpful, and more than willing to chat about whatever topic you want to talk on.

Now, if they would just turn the damn music down a bit, and put on something that I like!
