... by going into Hot Topic at the mall.
I was looking for Serenity shirts, but I didn't tell THEM that; I just said I wanted to go to Hot Topic. (Picture me, Suburban Mom in plaid cotton shorts and tee-shirt with purse over shoulder and geeky glasses, heading into the blacklit fake-brick dungeon filled with people wearing black clothes, black hair, black eye makeup, black teeth, black tattoos, etc.)
I had a very nice chat with the guy running the store and they DID have a nice big stack of Serenity tees and my children survived the horrible experience of (possibly) being seen by someone who matters while standing a few feet from their suburban mom in Hot Topic.

I'm gonna see Serenity then
go back the next morning and see it again.

C'mon Universal, and greenlight the sequel!

Yeah, that'd be quite an image. But somehow, I'm not surprised. Firefly/Serenity fans seem to have no walls between them and their goals. I can say I've gone into places I never would have had it not been for some kind of obsession I had, but I supposed it's a different story since I'm still fairly young. I'm looking for those shirts too.

You could tell them they were adopted. That would definitely do the trick.

My daughter is too young to be horrified yet, but I totally understand your experience in Hot Topic. I went in a few months ago to get a few Serenity tees. I'm 39 and have never set foot even near a Hot Topic in my life! The kids behind the counter were not only helpful...they were also Browncoats. I ended up standing there chatting with these teenagers and quoting Firefly. It was a wonderful Firefly experience!

Oh, they weren't afraid of Hot Topic, they were just afraid I'd give the goth kids a lecture or try to buy them some food and fatten them up a bit or something.
So silly. I don't look at people's clothes, I look through the windows of their souls, and I usually approve of what I see!

Ran into my first Hot Topic last Saturday in Durham, NC. Also a suburban Mom in capri pants, t-shirt and running shoes (good for Mall walking). At least dear daughter wasn't with me so she wasn't traumatized. She was at an anime convention.
First thing I noticed was that it seems to be a job requirement to have a nostril piercing and at least 2 tongue piercings.
Looked quickly, didn't see any Serenity t-shirts and walked rather quickly out. Wished now I had asked about them.
One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.
On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

Oh, goodness! The nose pierced, black-mascara wearers are the greatest!
And they know the products better than anyone! Just ask for Serenity t-shirts and they'll go gaga to help.
Now, as for embarrassing the kids by being seen with Mom, their friends will now think you are the COOLEST mom for taking the kids to Hot Topic!
(NO! MAN, you should have seen her! She bought a t-shirt that said, "I aim to misbehave"! It was embarrasing!)
