Yes, I imagine she is quite the heroine. She does always seem to win. I preferred Faith but you will see her turn up soon enough on Angel.

You probably would have been better served watching Buffy first but to each his own. While I really liked the series I found myself incresingly not liking Buffy as a character. She got more whiny and preachy with each season.

Basic premise to catch you up to the Buffy stuff: Angel was a very, very bad boy for a long time and now he feels guilty about it, so he wants to help people now. If you want a longer explanation...

Angel (his evil self is called Angelus) was a very mean and nasty vampire for a very long time. For about 250 years he murdered, raped, and psychologically destroyed thousands of people. He was made by a vampire named Darla, who is a badass but Angel ended up staking her in the first season of Buffy. He sired a vampire named Drusilla, who is batshit insane--which is Angelus's fault. He stalked her, killed her whole family in front of her, tortured her til she was full nutso and then turned into a vampire. Then later on she sired a vampire called Spike and he ends up being a huge big deal on Buffy too. The four of them did very nasty things together for about 20 years until Angel got a soul by eating the wrong gypsy. He got cursed by her vengeful family.

Angel wound up in America in the early 20th century (he's supposed to be Irish by the way, but just try and ignore the accent in the flashbacks as much as you can). He bummed around the continent and was just plain moody for about 70 years. Then he went crazy (the story is in season 4 of Angel) and was a homeless rat eater for 20 years until he got talked into following/protecting a new slayer, Buffy. He did that and whoops, they fell in love. They had sex, which made him really happy, which is apparently the wrong thing to be when you have a gypsy curse. He lost his soul, wore leather pants, very dramatically murdered one of Buffy's friends, and killed a whole bunch of cannon fodder schoolmates. Buffy and Angelus got into a huge deathmatchy fight when he tried to start an apocalypse. One of Buffy's friends (a witch named Willow who shows up on Angel from time to time) was trying to do a spell to restore Angel's soul. A bit too late, because Buffy had to send Angel to hell.

Somehow, Angel gets let out of hell. He's a bit wild and even more broody than usual. He and Buffy try to be 'just friends', it doesn't work. He leaves for her own good and winds up in Los Angeles. There he decides to make it on his own (with the help of an increasing number of sidekicks) and help the helpless in order to start to atone for the tons of very naughty things he's done.

Yeah, that wasn't short at all and I left out about 3/4 of the plots.... it's an intricate world.

Hey RiveR6213 - please stick with it. I think your initial trepidations are due to not having seen Buffy. As hard as they may try to eliminate the need to watch Buffy in understanding Angel, fact is it helps a great deal. Otherwise you're diving into bizarro world.

Some of the inital episodes are 'out there' and as though many of the writers have been smoking the carpet, but you'll become accustomed soon enough.

Stay with it. Please.

I'm really glad you're liking Angel now! It makes me sad when the people I like don't like the things I like!

I agree it starts badly but I really do like Angel (not half as good as Buffy though!)

It all makes more sense if you've seen Buffy first... Angel is only in the first three seasons of Buffy (apart from a few crossover episides later), so you get to know the character, understand the dark side of him, all the angsty Buffy Stuffy.

If it's not too late, STOP, watch Buffy first!

All this makes me really glad I've started with Buffy and really intrigued with Angel.
