That is one of my favorite Angel episodes. HATE the soap opera-y parts of it, but LOVE the Buffy/Angel torture at the end. IMO, it is some of the best acting SMG has ever done.

I think it would be really hard to watch Angel without having seen at least the first three seasons of Buffy. That gives you the proper backstory/frame of reference. Add to that, having to jump into this strange world of vampires and demons can be difficult. On the special features disc that goes with the Chosen Collection (Seasons 1-7 Buffy packaged together), Joss makes a statement about how the title of Buffy sums up the series. It was something like Buffy (Campy) the (you always need a 'the') Vampire (horror) Slayer (action). So it's a campy horror action show. Angel continues that but takes a slightly different path. You can't expect either show to be believable. It's a completely different universe with its own rules, etc. Buy into the 'verse and you'll be on one heck of a ride.

River, I'll have to agree with my esteemed colleagues here, Buffy The Chosen Collection needs your attention ASAP. Being a spinoff, Angel richly depends on your 'getting' the foundation.
And Buffy is stellar.
As good as Dark Angel, the one I said you should get...

It sounds like you're warming up to it, though. Keep it up; it'll pull you in, and then you'll find that you can't wait to find out what happens next.
