I love Xander. But I really needed to see him get his ass kicked for "Beginning", when he tells Buffy that Willow's message is to "Kick his ass" not about the spell.
I realize Joss makes it happen in "The Wish", in the last fight. Its like an alternate universe karmic/cathartic cleansing.
It also almost comes out in the Sixth or Seventh Season. Does anyone remember? It may have been about Spike, but Buffy confronts Will by bringing up the "Kick his ass" message and she looks all confused and starts to deny it, but then the subject gets changed. I was so pissed. It was the worst tease ever! I thought FINALLY Xander is going to have to own up. And then it was gone.

It was season 7, it was the Anya episode, the one where she killed the frat boys and then lost her powers (again lol)
I never really felt a need for Xander to get his ass kicked cuz of that. I mean Angel was evil at the time, and Xander hated him before he was evil lol, so I totally understood his position.
I think Xander paid enough anyway if you want him to pay, I mean he lost an eye and he lost the woman he loved, I think the scales are balanced.

There's also the fact that Buffy would have to face evil Angle knowing that Willow, etc were casting the spell to get his soul back. This would have made her hold back some and may have gotten her killed.
Best not to destract someone under those circumstances.

Oh, I realize that the storyline wouldn't have worked any other way and Xander has payed. But it just feels unfinished. Buffy just needed to find out and maybe punch him once. I don't know. I'm one of those crazy fans that sobbed when she realized she had to kill him, so even if it would have been wrong for the plot, the mind keeps thinking *what if*
