Well, your reply was a pleasant surprise. I figured this thread was buried a long time ago. As it turns out the ages of the people who've responded to the question has been fairly broad--which has been nice to see. So maybe it wasn't so strange a teenaged Cordelia Chase would know who Zeppo Marx was.

Then again, the other day I met a woman in her mid-twenties who didn't know who Dean Martin was.

I remember when I was 42. *sigh*

Hi! I still kinda new but in the few months I've been in and out of here, I've learned that no thread ever dies as long as new people join and go exploring into the depths of the archive. (Man, I think I just made that sound like spelunking.) Kinda reminds me of Dark Shadows characters...death never meant they left the show. I've been mostly in the general discussions area and have seen threads that were 2 and 3 years old being revived.

In regard to your poll, I'm also somewhat surprised by the amount of the younger generation that got the reference as well, (Although I don't know why--it was well before my time as well) but I think it may be due to the video/information age. The Marx brothers movies are avaliable and, still fun to watch, and as it's not too violent or (overtly) ribald, parents are more likely to just let the kids watch them. If the kids liked it, they go online to find out more.

I can sympathise with your experience with the young lady. I work with a twenty year old and recently tried to explain to her who Ricky Nelson was. I failed miserably.

I seem to recall be a bit more cognizant about people in my parents' and grandparents' generations--mainly from just listening to them talk about it. Heck--some play I did in grade school sparked an interesting set of reminiscences from my grandmother ranging from hair-bobbing to Barney Google and Valentino.

Hey, nobody said you couldn't still be 42, after all, how long did Jack Benny stay 39? And if anyone calls you on it, just give 'em chocolate.

i was 12. i got it.
have seen every marx brothers movie
i think there is, however, a lot of merit in the whole younger-folks-don't-generally-get-it
none of my friends even know who the marx brothers are. sad. :-(

Excellent, Killwithbrain! I think I was about 12 when I first discovered the Marxes too. My faves are Animal Crackers, Duck Soup, and A Night at the Opera. There are few movie scenes funnier than the stateroom scene.

I agree that 12 is surprisingly young to know about the Marxes. I think it's great that someone that young is aware enough to know life began before you were born and has the open-mindedness to seek and appreciate what was going on in previous decades.
