Can't say I'm a big Punk fan, but here's who I do like:

The Clash
Bad Religion
The Pogues
The Vandals
Iggy and the Stooges

The problem is, no one can really seem to agree on what real punk is. Someone above said they don't consider the Pogues to be punk, but I do (folksy, beer-soaked punk, but still punk). Whereas I wouldn't count Sum41 as punk (not saying I'm right, but that's my opinion).

Not that this is a new debate. People have been arguing over who's punk and who isn't since I first heard of punk. I'm sure the debate will continue as long as anyone still tries to call themselves or their music "punk".

Just to take some sort of a stance in this, I will say that I disagree with those who claim a band is no longer punk once they become poplular. While I'll grant that popularity often influences the work that follows, I cannot agree with those who retroactively re-classify music just becuase other people like it.

I was mostly joking about the Elvis thing. Although anyone who is deputized for an anti-drug campaign at the White house by the president(LBJ I believe) while on so many tranquelizers it could knock out a small elephant has to be considered a little punk.

I've actually been looking for a post to bring up this band. They are my favorite band of all time and they have been mentioned already but: Bad Religion. I fan of all their stuff old and new, and I saw them live which was awesome. What I like is that their lyrics are smart and really say somethin. Definately worth a listen namely:

Generator (both live and not live)
There Will Be a Way
Destined for Nothing
Evangeline
Materialist

All their stuff is great but I think that would be some of their best stuff (in my opinion).

i second the subhumans - cradle to the grave album.

rudimentary peni also had a phenomenol album, but can't recall the name now.

not my favourite genre however.

Those are my favorite punk bands, they're all quite exceptional bands, as is the genre. I like ska as well, the infectious and catchy air just appeals to me.

As far as punk in mainstream society, I have no qualms with punk music being acclimated into it, but it does tend to lose that free and exclusive air, and, as tawdry and prosaic as this sounds, comradery. So, I don't feel particularly inclined to listen to any punk that's been adopted into mainstream society, though I still do. Just reluctantly is all.

Yes, i'm aware that may have sounded a bit pretentious.

The Ramones aren't punk? What? Are you friggin' serious?

Do you know how many punk bands were started AFTER people saw a Ramones show?

Crimeny people, they are one of the orignal creators of punk history (and see that I said ONE of the originals).

Ramones aren't punk? C'mon people.....jesus crimeny on a pogo stick...

And for the person who mention Gogol Bordello....go see them live. They beat that stage into oblivion....good times.

I'm definitely not "up" on my punk. Like I said earlier, I like my punk OLD old-skool - i.e., original punk. Even at that, I was never heavy into the punk scene, just liked a few bands that got lumped into the punk genre. And it IS a hard genre to nail down. Believe it or not, after his first album came out (1977, if memory serves), Tom Petty was asked in an interview if he considered himself "punk". His response: "Call me punk, and I'll cut ya. Call my music punk, and I'll kill ya." While he's about as mainstream as they come, I always liked the response; there's a certain "punkness" about it... :)

I admit it - I like Green Day. I realize they're not so much punk as more of an homage to punk. They're too slickly produced, too commercial, too damned catchy to be real punk. I call their brand of music BubblePunk, a crossover between bubblegum rock and punk. I still kinda like 'em, though. Guilty pleasure, I s'pose.

That is because Rancid's singer/guitarist Tim Armstrong idolizes and is obsessed with Joe Strummer and the Clash.

and on a somewhat related note, there is a Joe Strummer documentary film in the works. not a bio-flick, a documentary.
