My greatest dream is that tolerance might take hold in the U.S.A.

Wow... this thread turned a little bitter.
On a completely different point... I work in a bookshop part time, in the childrens section. And I have seen/heard the all of the following:
Child: Can I have a book
Parent: A book? What do you want a book for? You've got a book at home.

Child: I hate books, they're boring.
***
Parent: I don't care how many good reviews it's had you should be reading educational things like Enid Blyton.
***
Parent: I wish your grandparents had never given you book tokens.
All these things destroy my day so I guess one of my wishes would be that every child would read one book that they really enjoyed and could dream because of it.
So yes, Sappy and pathetic but true because what's the point of anything if you don't dream?
Dark Angel, Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Enterprise, Farscape... anything else you'd like to cancel?

Well, that didn't take long. I had hoped to see more personal, real life comments here, instead of the standard political rhetoric.
*Nitpicky part- Corporatism has more to do with economics, I think, than politics.
*Major area of concern- The quest of the almighty dollar is bi-partison, and as such I am singling out no particular party. To assign 'political rhetoric' to my post is like saying I'm bashing Bush if I wish for world peace (Hmmmm....Naw, I won't start).
So, what am I being now, in your unclouded view, by wanting our children to come before corporate profits- too liberal or too conservative?
And if you dare play that "How do corporate profits negate family values?" card, my only response will be

When has anyone ever been happy at work? Seriously. That's why it's called WORK! And it's workplace angst ( which I think is totally made up B.S. but I digress..) and not soupline angst. Which do you REALLY think is worse? HINT: It ain't the workplace one.
Pressure to perform? Heck yeah! Don't like your job, get another one, or go into work for yourself.
No one is forcing anyone to have two jobs, or to have kids, for that matter. Certainly not to have more kids than they can afford.
Do you REALLY need a Gov't to teach you about your family values ? Why should the Gov't be there handing out $$ in the first place ? And what cuts ? Aren't we talking about reduction in increases? Like was the case 10 years ago when Newt Gingrich took control of Congress and the Dems/Media screamed bloody murder at the 'slashing, draconian cuts ' which weren't anything but increases ? Here we go again!
Thanks for the kind words, per the times I make sense. Likewise to you as well. I also must say that never did we have times where all is well. Those are clearly subjective observations. 100 years ago, working in the field for 12-14 hours was a fine day of work if it wasn't too hot or it didn't rain. Perhaps its the rise of the middle class in human history which has pitted one man against another. One man works from sun up to sun down and has little to show for it, while another man seemingly works very little, in an office for half that time, and does much better for himself. It's far from perfect, on that we'll agree, but what in life has ever been perfect? Or fair?
Can we do better? I'd like to think we could. Does human history give us any reason to think things will get better ? Depends on whether one sees the glass half full, half empty, or being twice the size it needs to be.
