People's issues with Buffy

So why does everybody hate Riley and how come people didn't dig BUffy working at the Doublemeat Palace? I thought Riley was kinda charming no Xander but who is
and i got a six pack from laughing so hard when buffy worked in fast food
having worked at McDonalds for 9 months at 14 i really appreciated it

I liked Riley, he was the best guy I saw on that show... and he was really, really cute.

I'm a fan of BTVS S.4 and never quite understood why that particular season is so despised by some nor why Riley takes the brunt of the complaints.

I've seen women do exactly what Buffy did with her S.3 to S.4 relationship pattern: Go from a tumultuous first love... life or death relationship (where her heart and soul are ultimately raked over the coals) TO a steady, sturdy, reliable type that would actually be a better father to any future offspring.

In going from Angel to Riley, Buffy did exactly this going from one extreme to another (and then to a THIRD more dangerous extreme later with Spike). Nice guys finish last and Riley was certainly a nice guy. This must be why certain fans hate him so much. Being a nice guy myself, I naturally align myself with the Rileys and Xanders of the world so I had no problem with this BTVS story arc.

Also thought the Initiative was a cool idea bringing in a Big Brother/Government/Military corruption angle to all the magic and monsters.

As for Buffy's fast food job, the only reason it annoyed me... it brought back my own fast food employment memories/nightmares {shudder}. Thankfully I was never put through the meat grinder when I worked fast food (not physically at least).

Riley is a jock-personality meaning very little of it. When he was normal, he was insanely dull. He wasn't quirky or anything. When he was all comando, he was too good at stuff and again, not very interesting. Don't flame me for saying so. It's just mine among others opinions. But then again, I never liked Buffy either. Just a select few of the scooby gang.

one thing still confuses me one you mention that riley was a jock i thought he was more bookish and thoughtful albeit with a jock physique i always think of jocks hyper compettive and let's say not very well read unlike riley he was a little vanilla but i was still feelin' him

oohh ohh!! Unrelated question (sorry)... Do you have grease burns too? Every single person I have ever known to work at McD's has a grease burn...

Being a Buffy fan from day one, I have to agree that the big problem with Riley is just that he wasn't Angel. We grew to love the guy and think of him as Buffy's One True Love. Bringing anyone else into the mix is just wrong. Even with Spike, someting just wasn't right. In my mind it always was and always will be - ANGEL

I agree with you there, that Angel was the one for her, but I think I could have been convinced otherwise. I thought as much about Willow and Oz and I came around to Tara (even though I actually like Oz better).

Riley was bland- not a bad guy at all, but not much to him. He was what Buffy needed at the time; normality, stability. I've seen a lot of people in reality go through this after a bad break-up.

Part of the reason I think Riley was so bland and didn't gel is they seemed unable to make him believably flawed like the rest. The Scoobies were a big pile of neuroses and Riley didn't fit in with that or compliment it as a straight man. When he did acquire his fatal "Buffy won't love me unless I'm bad" it felt forced to me.

hey LOTTV no grease burns but i did work one day when a guy dropped his glasses in the fryer and of course they melted and the managment still made us use it. Yuck
i am suprised i had no grease burn especially cuz one night one of themanagers who was trying to be 'cool' bought us all tequila and let us drink at work and with booze googles the did food look better but i'm thinking having a bunch of buzzed kids run around the uber grill metal thing we made the burgers one was a lttle less than prudent
