My dad and my brother just got back from a trip to Texas the other day and told me about this.

On their way home the airport in Texas was really busy and security was extra tight because the president was in town. They didn’t know that at the time and where a little confused by everything that was going on. My brother said that he saw a few people being escorted away to be searched and that they were followed by two men with blue gloves. As I’ve been told, my brother leaned over to my dad and as he pointed to the men said, “Two by two, hands of blue”. My poor father, who was already uncomfortable flying, had also just seen Ariel before he left.

Today, at work, I told one of my temps to go sort some boxes of old papers in one of our rear storerooms, a job that should have taken about 20 minutes. After almost an hour, I decided to go check on her. I walked into the storeroom to find her in the middle of the room with boxes strewn all about. For an instant, I was seeing red in anger(this room was neat, if disorganized, when she started!) when a sudden thought raced through my head. I couldn't resist saying "Were there monkeys? Terrible space monkeys?" The look on the poor girl's face made me break out into laughter, confusing her even more. I tried to explain it to her, but I dont think she got it, because she kept giving me strange looks the whole time we worked on sorting those damn boxes...

Oh, my GOD! Who's flying this thing! Oh, right, that would be me...

[what brings Firefly to mind for you?]

Ok for me, it would be looking out my front door, down by our pine trees where almost every evening we have fireflys flashing on and off... on and off... on and off... We live out in the county 8 miles from the closest town and 1/4 mile from the closest neighbor and 3/4 mile from the next closest neighbor, and then over a mile from the next closest neighbor....

And of course with the prominent Western theme, every morning and evening when I go out to feed, water and do 'what-ever' with my horses (23 of them) ... and hear them eating... sneezing, and stomping.. and the occasional Whinney, (horses never whinney as much as depicted in the movies....) I think of Fire fly...

And then finally....

I am a crack shot with a rifle.... and not bad with a 'scatter gun' (if any of you also watch John Wayne Westerns... what movie was that from???? )

AND...

if I'm close enough... I am pretty good with a pistol..... (357 Magnum is actually my preference)... My preference up close though is a shotgun... My preference at a distance is a rifle... so of course I think of the premier episode Serentity... When he met with Patience?? on Whitefall??? (I have only watched these episodes through once or twice)... So please bear with my nievete' "sp"... and my newness...

When Jayne was behind the sights of the sniper rifle... It just brought back vivid memorys... I was in the army and had the 250 Meter target in site many times... and got it most every time...(the drill seargents started refering to me as Cochise) I was an expert shot...

This scene almost made me fell like I was laying there in the prone position, stock pressed firmly against my right shoulder, looking through the site, being very conscious of my inhaling and exhaling.. to anticipate when I may have to 'take my shot'... looking first at Mal, and Zoe to make sure 'MY' people were ok.... (OK... fantasizing a little about what would happen if Mal wasn't in the picture and I would get the chance to 'be in charge...') But then realizing Mal is the leader, 'MY CAPTAIN' and, I am looking to the 'bad guys' to see if they were playing by the rules... I could take them out from this distance and protect my captain.... and Zoe, who ( I suspect) ... he respects... (Even thought he wansn't a 'Brown Coat'...

Well, I've been awfully Long winded this morning.....

Have a great day...

Leah... "Ro"

Oh... StillShiny, I could tell you storys.. here is just one... that you might really enjoy...

I grew up on a working farm, we had beef cattle, pigs, and we also raised large and small grains... and unlike today... I was raised to be very independent! I only had a babysitter a very, very few times.. I was pretty much on my ow on my own pretty much when I was 10 or 11... their philosophy was if I can go off on my pony or be out with the pigs or cattle, and be on my own for 10 -12+ hours a day why couldn't I take care of myself other wise...

Any way when my dad when back to Alaska to work, my mother took a trip to Alaska to visit her parents, this was when I was only like 13 or 14 or so...

Our house was on a smallish private lake that was always filled with geese from early spring to late fall, well these hunter guys drove down into the field with-in striking distance... (shot gun distance) of our geese.. I hopped on my horse and rode Hell-bent-for-election... up to where they were and told them they were on private property and that they couldn't hunt here!!!!

There were 3-4 guys and the guy that seemed to be in charge (a Jayne-type Macho guy), looked at me, then, very subtley laid his shotgun across the hood of the blazer (the barrel of the weapon pointed at me) and very simply said, "What are you going to do about it???"

I may have been young but common sense told me that they knew that my parents were out of town, (small town of population 1200, they publish that stuff in the paper), and I was out-numbered , so I turned my horse around and rode straight back up to the house... where my 22 with scope was in the house... Loaded when my parents were away...

Hey, now, you never know when varmints may be around...

Well, I ran into the house and grabed my 22, ran back out just as they were approaching our geese, weapons raised and ready, and I..... with one shot put a round into a tire on thier vehicle. I will never ever for get these guys stopping dead in their tracks... knowing that they had shotguns... (short Range) and I had a rifle... Long Range... and I WAS/AM A GOOD SHOT!

They stood there for the longest time... looking toward the house, then at the geese, then back to the house, then back at the geese... the 'Jayne-type guy' advanced a couple steps toward the lake, and I shouted at the top of my lungs that unless they had more then one spare in their car, or they wanted to walk 12 miles back into town, they better change their flat and leave... or the county Sherriff that I called would give them a ride to town.. (Yes, YES, looking back now... it wasn't the best plan in the world but... I couldn't let them shoot our geese!!!

The guys went to the rear of their vehicle, put their weapons in thier cases, changed the tire and left... Never to be seen or heard from agian...

Leah... thinking of the good-ole-days..

on my way to denmark last week (grey, stormy, wonderful north sea, wind, weather, books, sand, in one word: holiday) i saw extraordinary many numberplates saying 'VER-A' something.
gotten there i started reading a book in which a girl appeared whose name was saffron - and in the end it turned out that it wasn't hear real name at all ;o) and even though that saffron-girl had no main part in the story, i started thinking if the author is a fff herself.
i even saw a tshirt which had 'firefly' on it; but it was not any similar to our firefly, just blue and orange and not shiny at all. which made me smile was that i didn't see it first, but my boyfriend pointed at it and said: "look. now you will smile the whole day, just because of that ugly shirt." and he was right.

i find myself wondering what the kids at school would have said about you if they knew about that story. I think I remember you telling it to me back in the day, but as we've reflected, much has gone on in the years since. I've seen the 22, and that look...

my weekly entry:

during the sermon at church this week, the pastor was talking about choices. this, by the way, is a man who's deep into Native American spiritualism as well as Christianity, Lutheran style.

and I quote "to make a choice is to make a decision. to not make a choice is to make a decision." my head went right to the scene near the end of The Train Job when Zoe and Mal are dropping off the vaccine:

Quote:

SHERIFF: You were truthful back in town. These are tough times. If a man can get a job, he might not look too close at what that job is. But a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, well, then he has a choice.

MAL (looking stone-cold serious): I don't believe he does.

A look of understanding passes between them.

for the record, church was the last place I expected to find myself in the Firefly zone.

A couple of times while reading Ship of the Line ...

Made me think of Mal taking the long route to get places.

Any excuse to stick a Rush quote in here.

At the post office we have this clerk who really works hard at getting out of having to do work. And he's proud of it. So, today he got a little laugh when I described him as "jing tzahng mei yong duh" and told him what it meant.
