new converts

So... I've been converting heathens, and I'm growing conserned with the results.

All those I've shown Firefly to, have taken to it. They laugh at the right moments, gasp at the right moments and cry at the right moments. The most common phrase I've been hearing lately is "Put the next disc in!"

Sounds great, right?

So what's the problem?

None of them seem to have that... browncoat spirit. Excepting my family, none of them seem to care enough to join the battle. I don't for a second believe any of five friends I've converted will buy the DVDs. They either don't have the money or don't care enough, or both (probably both).

I don't know what to do. Am I going about it wrong? Are my friends just losers? Or do they just need time to come around to our side?

I'm feeling a little downhearted, and need some advice from any older, wiser browncoats.

I'm not older, nor am I wiser. I've actually having a similar problem. What is it with some people? The way I see it, if I'm gonna share something that I love SO much with my firends, I expect some degree of osmosis from them. My sprirt and passion is supposed to rub off on them. It doesn't seem to work, though. Am I over zealous?

I may be biased but I don't think you are overzealous. It's hard getting new people to enjoy the show. I mean they love it but they don't want to go the extra distance. All I do is make it casual and let them see what they are missing.

With the series over and the movie finished (for now), I wonder if it's just that newbies don't feel the urgency and hope that those who discovered it earlier had when the episodes were still on Fox or the movie was in production. We had something tangible to look forward to and the anticipation was energizing.

I didn't watch the original showing on Fox, but rented it from Netflix and the disappointment that it was over when I got to the last disk was devastating, but then I heard the movie was coming out and it just fueled my need to own it all!

It may be the new newbies just don't want to get excited over something they see as over.

Just my 2 cents.

My philosophy is, "If you introduce ten people to Firefly and two of them buy the series and the BDM, your mission is accomplished.

Not everyone will become zealots, but if they enjoy it, then they are people we can utilize in the future.

For instance, a few brilliant people on this forum have suggested enlisting people to simply turn on, tape, or Tivo the Firefly marathon on Sci Fi in March. You aren't asking your "converts" to go the extra mile and spend money, but you will be expsoing them to more Firefly, while at the same time boosting ratings on a potential successor network.

A good plan for both "lukewarm" Browncoats and *cough*financially challenged*cough* Browncoats.

This brings up a question I had the other day. I thought the same--regardless of where I am or what I'm doing, I must have a tv turned onto the SciFi channel during the Firefly marathon in March, and I must get others to do the same, to boost ratings. Then someone told me that unless you have a Nielsen box, it doesn't matter.

I admit I'm completely ignorant when it comes to how the ratings game is played, but does anyone know what effect (if any) it will really have if all of us non-Nielsens tune in to the marathon??

Don't be discouraged-- You're doing just fine! Not every person is going to be *ahem* crazy about the show like us. But almost every person LIKES and most LOVE the show... That's plenty. I think our only goal as Browncoats should be to introduce Firefly to the whole world, so everyone can enjoy this wondeful gem.

As regards sequels, etc, we'll leave all that to the PTB. We're doing our job, and as long as we keep showing our DVDs and sharing our love and Browncoat spirit, then Firefly will never really die...

At the risk of being perceived a zealot, I went to Oprah.com and went to the section where you suggest a show and wrote that I'd like to see Joss Whedon on her show. You only have about 2,000 characters to write, so I had to cram. Anyway, Oprah has always been supportive of the
"under dog" and I thought Joss and his Browncoats were a perfect show for her.

But I was just one voice, if everybody here went to Oprah.com and wrote....? What do you think?

What's a Nielsens box?

I thought of the Oprah thing... but never did it. Actually... I'm a little scared of Oprah at the minute. lol. But it does seem like the kind of thing she'd support if she knew about it... maybe someone should send her a copy of Firefly.

Its a good, and noble idea, but I don't think Oprah will go for it, but you are given an "A" for effort.
