Re: Nielson boxes
These are used to measure ratings for TV shows in the US. Only a small percentage of the population has them and they are managed by a private marketing firm (Nielson) that gives the gathered info over to the networks. I have no idea how one goes about becoming a "Nielson family", and have never met one (although they are a bit like the CIA in their secrecy). So basically a (relative) handful of the population is deciding what all of us get to watch....I've actually been quite bitter about this for a long time since almost all of my favorite shows inevitably get cancelled
Frankie, I can totally relate about the lack of zealousness among new converts...I've shown quite a few people (at least 20) the series and/or movie and, while all of them have truly enjoyed or loved it, only one has actually gotten the series on dvd. I did give out a few movie dvd's for Christmas, which were all greatly appreciated. But yeah, no one has become obsessed like myself.
Must be I have an obsessive personality

Per the Nielson's and stuff...
I never had a box, but as it happens I was contacted by them a few years back, right around the time Firefly was airing. What they did with me was sent me a couple booklets where I'd manually fill out what I was watching and when, etc... Then I'd send it in to them. Came postage-paid and all that, and I think they sent me like $10 cash or something for motivation.
Looking back, I wish I'd done more, but I'd only caught maybe three episodes at the time. (I work nights, so it always aired when I was at work, and didn't always remember to set the VCR.) For my part, there was a section at the end of each book for the week, where you could write whatever, and they'd ask you about what shows you'd missed but planned to watch. I remember mentioning Firefly, and wishing it had been given a time schedule that was easier for me to catch. Looking back, I wish I'd written more for that, but I didn't REALLY get the bug until the DVD came out and I was able to see the rest of the episodes...
With TiVo and such, it almost seems like they'd have some way to keep track of the shows you record. I don't have one yet, so I wouldn't know though. Sounds like if they did have a way to track your viewing, though, that they'd say so somewhere...
And back to the original post, I've have the same problem with some converts. They might be fans, but I've found very few browncoats in the people I've exposed to the 'verse. Every little bit helps though, we'll always be the underdogs. But even enlisting one to the cause can help tip the balance. (And don't forget that if that one person helps to recruit just one more, and so on...)
