I would be almost stunned if there wasn't at least a made-for-Sci-Fi Channel movie somewhere down the line. You look at how bad most of their original movies are, and since they're also owned by Universal and already have the rights, I can't imagine them passing at the chance for a Serenity movie.

But we should still be greedy, aim high, and hope for another feature-film version.

I think our best bet would be either a SciFi series, not an unprecedented event, I mean they have the rightsto the original show and they are using them and it wouldn't be the first spin off series that SciFi has done and done well (I am a fan of SG: Atlantis). But there is a lot of logistical work to be done before that happens.

Our best hope is for Joss to write some more FF Comics, if he isn't to busy with Astonishing X-Men. I would LOVE for him to put out a monthly FF book. I think that it would be a great way to keep the Verse going. The thing I am worried about is that if the Verse lies dormant for too long it might not start up for a very long time, and then probably with new characters on a new ship in a new time periode (Think StarTrek TNG)

But i got carried away there. Basicaly either a SciFI series or books probably of the Comic variety.

Except that, unfortunately, Fox apparently stills owns the rights to it as a TV series. Universal (and by extension, the Sci-Fi Channel) have the movie rights, but they'd have to buy the TV rights from Fox first before producing their own series, and the cost of that might be too much to make it worth their while.

(Sci-Fi Channel has the rights to air the syndicated re-runs of Firefly, but that's a whole separate deal.)

Seems to me the figures are off a bit....Way to go on your positive thinking also....sheesh. If more thought like you we'd NEVER had had the MOVIE......so please just stop thinking negatively.
Also....I dont know where you all are here, but Comcast has the Firefly series on "On Demand" right now, more people will be able to see the series! PLUS there's lots of talk about Serenity out there still. Joss will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have time and/or make time for Serenity/Firefly...of that I have NO doubts :)

Browncoats around the world cried out in despair when, due to an underwhelming performance at the box office, Joss Whedon announced that the saga of Serenity had ended. No sequels, no follow-ups, no hope. But Whedon isn't a man to let his brain-child die; the man's already resuscitated the franchise once and there's still hope for a third coming.

"A sequel's unlikely," Whedon told Empire with a note of clear regret, "but it's amazing what permutations of something can happen." But if not a theatrical encore, that leaves... yes, you guessed it, a possible return to the smaller screen. "As long as I was able to service the characters with integrity and had enough money so that I wasn't hampered, then I would love to return Serenity to TV. I love that universe; it continues and those characters live on. There could be a series, there could be a miniseries, there could be all sorts of things. I'm not ruling anything out. I'll let it simmer for a while and see if anyone calls."

As for why the film failed to rake in the cash despite uniformly glowing reviews, according to Whedon it's all in the presentation. "It's a question of marketing ultimately. The fact that I like to dance around genres with gay abandon has worked to my disadvantage. Nobody knows exactly how to market anything I do because it usually has so much in it. It has a diffuseness because of it's origin that keeps it from being the easy sell. Some people also said that you can't call an action movie 'Serenity' but I think that's still okay. What was I going to call it? 'Big Smash Bang With Boobies'? Which was, of course my second choice."

DVD sales should, however, put Serenity back in the black and when the bucks start rolling in we can only hope that one of the suits at Universal looks at the numbers, adds the success of the Firefly DVD box set and greenlights a return for Captain Reynolds and his crew. Until that time we advise Whedon to keep his phone switched on.

They make the silliest Sci fi original movies for the most part. They are obviously desparate for some new good material. I agree with you whole heartly we will see a scifi original sequel at the very least.
