doggone it!
So I've been holding on to the movie for somethin like a month..not wanting to watch it. It's silly, but I just didn't want it all to end.(ok so I get a tad dramatic over my Firefly).
So last night, my husband and I break down and watch it.

I cried like a little girl who lost her puppy..then found it..then watched it smushed my the ice cream man.

I just needed to get that out. I've been down ever since. Missin' Wash, feeling sad for Zoe. I don't even know these people..they're not even real people.
I think I'm either drinking too much..or too little.
I'll get back to you when I find the answer.

I'm just sad.

"Out of gas" makes me the saddest. When Mal is talking to Zoe about aquiring the ship and talks about being free...the music...and everything is too much.

Joss makes clear in the commentary that the afforementioned tragedy involving Wash was not in the first draft, and it was done with the approval and support of Alan, for the sake of making the rest of the movie more dramatic. Sacrifices were made to make the movie more griping, sacrifices that, if we get a sequel, Joss will explore. Joss is GREAT at character-death aftermaths, watch buffy n angel you'll see.

And yes, I cried too. Both for Wash, and for the implications of having our BDM and no guaruntee of anything more.

(P.S. Why do we always forget that book dies? Meh, what terrible people be we... /shrug)

Having watched the movie first and the series later. I have a slightly warped/differing POV.

I watched the movie about a month back, and was not overly impressed. The dialogue was very good, the actors played the roles well. However, the movie itself lacked substance for someone not already aware of the TV series (I wasn't).

However, in my case I liked the Universe (despite hating the Mr Universe character and some other little issues). I downloaded the TV series (and have since ordered a DVD set from Amazon).

On finishing the TV series, I felt the same way as you feel now having watched the movie. Its like there is something missing in life - as silly as that sounds. I have been able to cope by downloading everything related to the series online including commentary, fan fiction, convention gatherings videos etc. Alas, it is running out, and I need something to feed my Firefly addiction.....

As a side note, I think the TV series was just so much better than the movie. The movie was great, but with time constraints and having to explain so much in such a short time, Joss did a great job. But I have come to realise one thing, another movie will not do it for me. The Firefly Universe deserves another showing, with Joss being given enough time to tell the complete story.... cramming the story into another movie feature will only make things worse IMHO.

That's really close to my story. I saw the movie first, and was impressed by the concept, dialogue, and acting, but not really blown away. Then I watched the series and went back to the movie. HOLY CRAP! Knowing the characters really cranked it up. Just seeing Serenity again with that haunting music almost brought me to tears (I had to hide them from my brother, who I had dragged along for his introduction to the 'verse). I almost couldn't watch the part where Wash died.

I like scifi/action, so I liked the increased action in the movie. But if I had a choice, it would be for less action and more character development - another TV series. I don't know what part of my brain Joss tapped, but I can't shut down the Firefly need.

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.

Its really ok Wash is alive and kicking and will be at the Comic Con in Orlando Florida this weekend. I'm gonna see him and River. Yea I know their actors, I loved Alan Tudyk in 28 days but believe me I gonna tell him how hurt I was about what happened to his character.

That's an excellent point and exactly why it was so frustrating to see Book and Wash dying in a movie, especially given that we may never get that sequel (certainly not soon). Doing something like that in a series makes sense because you have immediate recompense in the form of next week's episode. You get to see the fallout, the way it affected the other characters and the 'healing process' is played out. With something like that in the movie, well, it's like someone has rammed you through the chest with a large spike and just left it there.

In the quest to reach a wider audience, they also filed off a lot of the rough edges for the movie - the western feel, the quirky poetic dialogue, the twangy soundtrack. People keep trying to convince me that was necessary for the 'movie' format, but I don't buy it. It just made movie less unique and seemed a concession to mainstream action movie expectations.

My boss (also a fan) summed it up best. On its own, as a one-shot movie, Serenity was pretty damned good. But as a follow up to the series it was disappointing.

When I watched it the first 2 times, I cried through the end of the movie so I had no idea how it ended. Damn you Joss for using your mind for evil. I still cry when I watch Wash, but then I watch Firefly and feel a whole lot better.

How 'bout this?

Another movie starring Book as the evil operative (or whatever he was) becoming "no longer their man," after being beat to snot by a Mal-like character. That'd make a nice parallel.
