I posted this in the other thread on this topic (found here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15852) but I was really quite dissapointed with the Christmas Invasion. Tennant did well with what he had and I'm sure he'll be a fantastic doctor but a sword fight??? I had trouble believing Tennant could lift the thing let alone fight an 8 foot warrior alien with it. I thought the whole point of Doctor Who was he doesn't solve his problems with violence. He out-thinks his opponents. That seemed to be the whole point of bringing in Capt. Jack last season, an actiony guy and a clever guy.

Also, can they give the sonic screwdriver a rest? I love it too, but it's a sonic screwdriver, not a weapon. I hate that they've given him one gadget that can do everything every situation calls for, how will we solve this problem? Sonic screwdriver!

Anyway, enjoyed moments of the ep, but as a whole it just didn't do it for me. Still looking forward to season 2 though.

But the sonic screwdriver has always been a deus ex. At this point in the series they are bringing back things that people remember from the old show and having fun with them. Besides who doesnt love the "putting up shelves" comment?

As to not fighting, he does fight, remember Pertwee's alien karate? Baker's doctor killing Sutec is a more violent thing because he had his enemy helpless and killed him slowly. This Doctor never intended to kill the alien just force him to surrender.

I thought it was ok. Given that it was my first DW episode, I'm not sure how it compares to the rest, but thought Tennant was great and pretty much everything else was outrageously naff.

It was a great episode. I was not sure whether David Tennent would be able to follow Christopher Eccleston I felt he was OK but nat as good myself. I Could just be northern pride.

Yeah the episode did have some week points to it, but on a whole i thought is was good, given that it was made soley for the christmas period.

And on the sonic screwdriver note, yeah maybe they use it too much, but its always been with him, maybe not until the second or third doctor, but still, its his trusty tool, and if it does everything, why not take it everywhere and do everything with it.

Cell phones do everything these days apart from dress you, dont they, you carry them around with you all the time and pretty much use them all the time, so i dont see the argument in that.

I rest my case.

david tennant totally kicked sycorax ass!!! i was a BIG eccleston fan - i can just about forgive him for the "i think you need a doctor" line (can you smell stilton?). but dave gets points for "this is a fightin' hand!", the trainers-and-trench combo, the opening line, oh yeah, and the whole saving the earth thing. though i kept expecting him to break into song at any moment, i think he made a brilliant doc. even if he's not ginger.
