Am I the only one who uses Windows Movie Maker? I'm hoping (with the help of a good friend) to get Apple to donate a Final Cut Pro to my classroom since I teach a unit in film production, but we'll see.

See, well, yeah. It's like this. You'd be the only one. Not that I'd judge you soley by this but I reckon moving to FCP would be quite the jump.

Well, Final Cut has some of the most transitions and effects of others I've used, but I don't particularily care for the format, but most of all, I hate the way rendering is set up. It could have been the version I used, but when I used it, every time you tweeked something, you had to render it in order to see it played. That was also true for Adobe Premier, but the Adobe Premier PRO was more like Studio in that you never had to render until you were done with the project. You could aways watch back your movie in good quality without any wait. Are there versions of Final Cut where you don't have to render as you go?

Whatever any of you do, DO NOT USE ANY WINDOWS BASED PROGRAMS. Or iMovie that matter. Almost all are junk if you want to make a high end quality movie. Use FINAL CUT. It's a bit pricey, but there is Final Cut Express for the cashed strapped. It doesnt have as many features, but still is the best line of movie editing software.

To follow up what I said, I have used Apple Computers for over 2.5 years now, and I find they are far better to edit movies with that PC's. My friend has a PC movie editing program, and he's says it's absolute crap compared even to iMovie. iMovie is fine, and can be learned in about 30 minutes to an hour, but is not made for anything longer than 8-9 minutes, and can't do all the fancy stuff you'd like to. When using Final Cut though, you can do much more in the line of covering up mistakes, editing sound, and lighting defects, and it also makes movies look much more presentable. I used Final Cut 5 when helping to make a feature length movie, and found it made a big difference.

Well, as someone who has used Final Cut, iMovie and Windows based programs, I can tell you for a fact that you're wrong. Final Cut is a fine program for some, yet it's workflow leaves much to be desired. As for Windows software not being good enough for high end? Vegas Video's DV codec is renowned for it's quality and I just finished editing two television pilots complete with full Dolby 5.1 surround mixes using it. And yes, it works with HD footage if need be. I'm not trying to get into a computer or program war here but to each his own. I use Mac and PC's for different things. They're just a tool, nothing more.

Me an' you, probably the only people keeping Windows Movie Maker alive.
I mean, I'm keeping my amateur vid skill status so I can compete in the olympics, but still...
I don't need no fancy expensive programs to play around with some vid clips and songs. I just have fun.

There's nothing wrong with Avid at all. I downloaded the trial version last year and have played with it quite a bit. I still use Windows Movie Maker 2 though for most of my vids, but I did do a faux trailer or two (The Ballad of Serenity trailers) with Avid and was very happy with the results.
