Well, if you want to make a career out of it, you're going to have to learn to use products such as AVID (Shudder) which you'll swear was purposely designed to sell training courses on how to use it.
Screen blast studio is based on an early version of Vegas Video and lacks all of it's advanced features. You can download a demo of the full package from Sony's website, check it out.

Pinnacle studio is great - when it works.
I have more problems with that blasted program than I care to think about!
It seems I can get one project done per version. Once I'm successful getting one project done, the rotten thing won't work again for months (and nothing changes. I just can't figure it out!)
My brother-in-law's cousin is using a new Sony editor software (can't recall the name, sorry) that looks really really cool. Expensive though...

What's wrong with Avid? It is far better than the likes of the Vortex or Casablancas I have to use at work. In fact it is the best out there as long as you know how to use it. I mean it is over doing for vidding since the very simple Moviemaker that comes with window will do the job jus as well.
Anyways, if you want a career in editing then your best bet is to become Avid certified. Even if the company you're looking to get hired by doesn't use Avid it'll put you up over most other people who will go out for the job (except experience or knowing somebody which are usually the ultimate factors when hiring in that industry). If you're young then make sure you get an internship somewhere and do a damn good job and that'll open doors which is what helped me on top of my Avid certification.
If you live in the Albany, NY area I would highly suggest attending the Television Studio and Production course at the New School of Radio and Television. They provide Avid Certification (at a cost though)and training in all the fields of Television production as well as an internship near the end of the course which is required to complete the course anyways.
You should also note that there is a huge difference between amatuer and professional editing.
Anyways, good luck and stay away from working doing weddings. Great payoff but crappy work. News or if you're lucky commercial production is where you want to go if you want to make a career out of editing.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with AVID and you're right, there's a huge difference between amateur and pro editing. AVID was one of the first but sometimes it's kinda like square peg, round hole. It's the standard because it's been around so long and once you learn to use it, yes, just like anything, it works well.
I've tried pretty much all of the consumer level video editors and Vegas is the best one I've found but of course, your mileage and experience will vary.

We use Pinnacle Studio Pro here at work. It's very flexible and seems to be able to do just about anything we want it to although I'm not a video editing guru and don't have much else to compare it to.

I use iMovie. So far it is able to do everything I need, but I am close to outgrowing it.

iMovie is a fantastic little editing program and I've been using it on and off ever since the very first version. I don't use it much today because like you, I outgrew it. That said, I still use it to rough things together on my iBook when I'm on vacation or something. I even did an audition shoot for someone awhile back where I went to their house, shot their audition, edited it on iMovie and gave them a tape right there and then to send it in.
