So what types of software are you vidders using?
What's the Cadillac of video editing programs?

Avid or Final Cut Pro are the Cadillacs of video editing but I don't vid, I work for Time Warner as a media editor.

Not sure about Cadillac of vid editing, I use fairly basic programs.
I use DVD Shrink 3.2 to get the clips, then Xilisoft Video Converter to change them from VOB to mpeg files, then Windows Movie Maker to compile them.
I'm sure there are better programs to use, but I'm just playing around.

I'm an Adobe person myself. Premiere for editing, Photoshop for titles, After Effects for any effects stuff, Audtion for sound, and Encore for burning to DVD.

I use DVD Shrink 3.2 to get the clips I want, and compile them with Cyberlink's Power Director 4 and Windows Movie Maker. I convert the DVD Shrink files to useable forms with Cowon's Jet Audio program (fantastic little media player of all types).
From the research I did, Power Director 4 was the cadillac of programs (within affordable range anyway). But you should check it out and choose for yourself. Don't discount windows movie maker though because for a built in program, it is suprisingly versatile.
Mal: Kaylee, what the hell's going on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?

I use Final Cut Pro. I used Premier, Avid, Avio and Canopus for non-linear editing and the Video Toaster for linear editing for my music videos in the past, but I am very happy with Final Cut Pro.
I am glad (and kind of sad) to see that no one is using crazy transitions like sheep falling from the sky - a Video Toaster classic! 
I know plenty of people who are happy with such programs as iMovie (Mac) and MovieMaker (PC).
No system does everything and I feel that whatever you have, you adapt to and make your own as you understand its strengths and weaknesses.

What don't you like about Final Cut Pro?
I never used Premier Pro or Pinnacle Studio myself, but I did use 6.5. It's not that I disliked the other programs, but I was not used to how they worked and what I would assume would work (because it does *this way* in another program) did not work and it was frustrating. Again, just getting used to what you have. However, they all do great work when you understand the tools.
BTW, SerenityValley, great art of Jayne and Tracey on your site. Tracey looks nearly life-like and you really caught Jayne's expression well. I also enjoyed the "Sad little king" picture. I could see that as a fun t-shirt.

iMovie is perfect for simple (and not so simple actually) work. I've used Final Cut on my Mac, not a fan. I mainly use Vega Video on my PC these days. Everytime Final Cut comes out with a "new and revolutionary" feature, it's something that has been in Vegas for a year or more usually. I just like that it's easy to learn, you've never fighting the program.
There's a stripped down version available as well.

i am an amateur editor, planning to make a career out of it, and i've got one called screenblast from sony. its good forsimple stuff, but its limitations really p*ss me off. i can't even do blue/greenscreen work! grrrr!
