Are these the US numbers? $4 mil for the #1 movie in the US seems awfully low.

Yes. Those are the US numbers. $4 mil has been about right the last couple of weeks for whatever reason.

Yes, domestic numbers. And you're right, VERY low, for all movies this time of year. I never realized how much "time of year" influenced a movie's opening but with watching BO since last April (the original Serenity opening date) I've been amazed at just how significant it is. That and people are going to theaters less and less (down 25% over last year).
On the other hand... dvd sales just before xmas, say for any scifi titles released on the 20th of Dec 
have a good chance of doing very well.

Hey, I'm real happy with those numbers. It's important to keep an eye on the theater count. Serenity is playing in about 500 fewer theaters this weekend than it was last weekend. That's a pretty steep drop in availability. So the fact that it made between $700,000-$800,00 on Friday is actually pretty solid. The key factor in observing the actual audience interest in a film is the per screen average. Movies in wider release (like The Fog which opened in nearly 3000 theaters) ultimately do better in terms of overall numbers, but often their per screen average is lower than films in smaller release. Given the theater drop, Serenity's per screen average might not be that much lower this week than it was last week. That's a good thing. It will show the Universal execs that people are still heading out to the movies and still looking specifically for Serenity, rather than just clunking down money for whatever's at the nearest multiplex. I'd imagine Serenity will close with $2-$3 million this weekend. That's pretty good for a cult sci-fi film. Keep it up guys! We're already at $20.6 million here in the US. It's going to finish short of the $80 million global take Universal indicated would garauntee a sequel, but given the positive audience response and the decent box office tally (not to mention what I imagine will be stellar DVD sales...I mean, if the series could sell 200,000 copies, the film must sell just as much or, right?). Let's just hope that people keep seeing the movie, that other countries continue to embrace it warmly, and that the people at Universal have the good sense to give us the sequel we deserve.

Them's an awful lot of DVDs... I'm gettin worried this will be the last we see of Firefly/Serenity :-( I hope i'm just being pessimistic.

Per screen average first Friday was $1805. Last Friday was $705. This Friday it was $415.
