I feel like a gnome obsessively keeping track of the movie gross. At the moment, a very unhappy gnome. I can't help but think that despite all the chin-forward buck-up rhetoric things are looking grim for any kind of continuation, at least in film/television.
Sure there'll inevitably be novels, I want Firefly in a visual medium, dammit. I never take well to literary interpretations of things I first knew on the screen (or vice versa).

As long as Serenity lingers in the 9-12 spot this weekend it will be fine.
There are pockets in the US where the movie is making a killing compared with the other films in the same cinema. That will keep it in those cinemas and continue to draw viewers. The cinemas themselves aren't as concerned with the overall gross of the movie, just their own demographic - is it making ME money in MY market compared with movie X and movie Y. Cities with 12/16 screen cinemas can keep it around a while.
I don't expect to see an increase in screens, but I bet it stabilizes at $400-$500 a screen on weekends and $200-$250 a screen weekdays as the screens drop down to about 1000. That would have it pulling in 2-2.5 million per week.

Well, it just seems that NO movies are doing well...even a big box office name like Jodie Foster didn't help Flightplan much, it hasn't made $30 million in the 3 weeks it's been out. And for all the number one movies to be pulling in only about $4 million in their opening weekends, just shows that movies aren't too popular right now no matter how good they are. I think it's because they are so expensive to go see, plus with gas prices the way they are people are avoiding driving, not to mention people are already beginning to try and save money for Christmas shopping. If DVD sales are really good and Universal considers the fact that no movies are doing too well in theaters this month, so Serenity has done comparatively well, they might do a sequel. Who knows? At least the movie got made!!

Out of interest, does anyone know if the revenue from the various fan preview screenings has been factored into Serenity's total yet? Not that I'm thinking it would make a great difference to the numbers, just curious.

Though sadly not as well as they would if they came out about 20 days earlier. :(

Um, being a 19 year old, I'd have to say so and all the people I've been bring along have been my age, minus my family. Although this question prompts one of my own...How old are all you browncoats?

I think we prefer the question, "How experienced are all you browncoats?"
There was a thread on this a while back that might be worth visiting: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=4720 I seem to recall that the age spread was pretty wide. And, on the topic of box office... Let's hope that the weekend estimates are off like they were a week ago. The actual take on Sunday last week was 30% better than estimated. Which means I should probably head over to the theater some time today to try and help out the numbers
.* edited to add: The estimates have Serenity taking in 2.3 million at the box office over the weekend. Based on similar movies (well, the only three that boxofficemojo provides free daily numbers on) a third week take of 3.3 million would be consistent. So the 2.3 million is average. I would consider anything higher than that to be a small positive. If Serenity dips under 200k during the week that would be troubling. Without a significant uptick the movie is on track to finish out the domestic run just north of 25 million. At this point I consider anything above 26.5 million to be a positive (based on the opening weekend numbers and the percentage of total box office that similar films made on a week to week basis - Serenity actually did slightly better during the second week than similar movies). The major obstacle is keeping the movie in theaters.

Too true, too true... SO, what you can do (the ole Browncoat Workaround, something we get used to livin' on the rim
) - Get your xmas list ready and on the First of Dec. go to Amazon and pre-order Serenity as gifts to be sent on the 20th to all of your unsuspecting friends and relatives... and the postman... and your cat washer... etc.Scifi movie music + Firefly dialogue clips, 24 hours a day - http://www.scifiradio.net
