Monday to Monday Box Office Surprise

There's a lot of apples and oranges comparision going on when looking at Serenity's numbers. New movies get into the mix, for instance, in total box office take. Different ways of slicing up the numbers are used (Monday to Monday, Monday vs. Monday). Different biases, different spin.
The spin I like is the one in the original post. Serenity's minor drop compared to the first Monday take is good news.
And Into the Blue has vanished from the top ten. That's not bad news either.

And I'd like to point out, since it keeps popping up... that Columbus day is *not* observed by colleges and work places as a 'day off'. So this Monday was nothing different from any other. This makes the news of such a low drop very exciting. I am going to try and see it again tonight myself. I will be hitting it next week also!

I had Monday off from work. Many companies don't observe it, but most if not all banks were closed for Columbus Day too.
This wasn't a major holiday, but just because you didn't have the day off, doesn't mean that no one else did.
Simply look at the numbers I posted above. Columbus day did twice as much business (counting the top 10 movies) as the Monday before.

I work for our local newspaper and I get to see each week's movie ads before they run in the 'paper. So far, all of our local theaters are dropping "Serenity" this Friday except one, a crappy little 2-screen cinema in the middle of downtown that doesn't get much traffic. Looks like I'll have to go there if I want to see it anymore. This trend doesn't look good for the movie's Box Office take.

If anyone doubted the effects of Columbus Day, this certainly shows it. Tuesday the 11th pretty much matches Tuesday the 4th as far as the top 10 total.

Not great, but not bad, you would expect box office earnings to be somewhat down after Columbus day and the rest of the chart shows that. If we can hold at this level for today and thursday that should put us in good stead for the weekend.

Portland must just be an anamoly. We had more than the single screen take in the show I went to yesterday.
But this doesn't worry me. Serenity will lose a few screens but #7 is better than #9. Looking at the numbers, Flightplan looks to lose a lot of screens.

Yeah, my question as well...i just checked imdb, and a handful of possibly large-theater-count titles are hitting the screens (e.g., Elizabethtown (Cameron Crowe with two quintessentially cute and well-known stars), Domino (hot chick, guns, Mickey Rourke, and probably lots of explosions), and The Fog (scary movies usually means decent box office), so my fear is that a lot of theaters are gonna push out the lower end of the top ten to make room for these movies.

The quickest and easiest way to tell if it's a real holiday or not is the freeway traffic... Getting to work this Monday was waaaaaay easier traffic than most others...
