But this doesn't worry me. Serenity will lose a few screens but #7 is better than #9. Looking at the numbers, Flightplan looks to lose a lot of screens.

Yeah, my question as well...i just checked imdb, and a handful of possibly large-theater-count titles are hitting the screens (e.g., Elizabethtown (Cameron Crowe with two quintessentially cute and well-known stars), Domino (hot chick, guns, Mickey Rourke, and probably lots of explosions), and The Fog (scary movies usually means decent box office), so my fear is that a lot of theaters are gonna push out the lower end of the top ten to make room for these movies.
BoxOfficeMojo does have estimates for the new movies:
Domino - 2,000
Elizabethtown - 2,500
The Fog - 2,700+
Someone made a comment that theaters make a 2 week commitment for some of these movies, so that would mean that none of last weeks openers will drop in screen number.
History of Violence looks to be gaining steam to me. I doubt it loses many if any theaters.
Flightplan will lose theaters.
Into the Blue should lose A LOT of theaters.
Corpse Bride should lose some as well.
