I very much want a new season of FIREFLY but the last people in the world I want to hold it in ownership is UNIVERSAL. Although Blu-Ray should help matters UNIVERSAL is the single worst DVD label of any major studio and diabolical when it comes to TV box sets. They have ruined everything from NORTHERN EXPOSURE to MIAMI VICE with their terrible quality DVD sets. The other studios can do TV box sets well why can't they? But alas their movie DVD's have never been that good. The sound and picture authoring on UNIVERSAL DVD's has always been mediocre at best.

You'd pass up a new series just because you think Universal will make bad DVDs? I'd be thrilled to have any new Firefly, at this point DVD box sets don't even enter into the equation. Of course looking at the box office numbers it looks like this is all a mute point anyway.

Hell yes, I'm with you on this one. A new Firefly of any type is best. Who cares about the dvd's. Worry about that later... We need the new series started first!

DVD is the format that works of all kinds
live on. Furthermore in today's market there
is a global market into which direct to DVD
can be launched. The existing FIREFLY set is
superb with true 24 frame Progressive Scan
playback for those of us who use component and
have LCD projectors etc. Quality matters it is
not something to think about later. If it is
not designed for high quality DVD playback
from the get-go that quality will NEVER be
there.

As for UNIVERSAL box sets such as Northern
Exposure, the discs are double-sided, poorly
identified, poor mastering, lousy packaging
and episodes missing.

There's an old saying about beggars and choosers, my friends.

I am not a beggar. Consumers pay good
money for quality product. That is what
we should get. If not I do not buy again
from those who put out second rate quality.

Here's how they ruined NORTHERN EXPOSURE:

Season Two - they literally removed some of the original background music and replaced it with what they thought was more contemporary. If you were a fan of that show you know how integral the unusual music was; KBHR and all. Anyway it's ruined essentially even though the show is still good.

Sigh. I didn't mean to denegrate any consumer's right to a quality product.

But--this product ain't even out there yet! Past track record or not, it seems a little bit precipitous to criticize them for errors they've yet to make.

If I'm overreacting, it's because a lot of folk on this site over the last few days have been extremely unapreciative of the good service Universal has given Serenity to date, prefering to dwell on perceived marketing errors. Maybe it's an overreaction to how badly we've all been "foxed" in the past.

I submit my humble opinion. Had Universal broadcast Firefly instead of Fox, it would still be on televison. On the Sci-Fi channel maybe, but it'd still be on.

And we'd have two or three seasons worth of box sets for everyone to gripe about the quality of.

You know, I would buy the movie or series if it was on vhs. What made the series enjoyable was the witty banter amongst actors who were the crew of serenity. The firefly universe, to me at least, is a kind of art that surpasses the medium upon which it is displayed and touches the soul.

On a final note, I'm grateful to Universal and everyone else involved that this movie was made.
