Even if there was a new TV series (which there isn't and probably never will be) Universal wouldn't have anything to do with it - Fox still has control of the TV rights.

On older shows the music royalties have not been negotiated for the DVD contracts. When the bands are re-approached about their music being used again for the DVD set... their prices suddenly go up (particularly the prices of the now forgotten one hit wonder bands that may have participated). All it takes is one series composer or a half dozen bands jacking up their rates to make a DVD box set financially unfeasible (or priced out of most consumers' range).

This also happens between markets. For example, the British sitcom "Spaced" (great show, btw) will not be released in the U.S. because the creators refuse to change a single song that they painstakingly chose and worked into the two seasons that show ran. The creators had the rights to the music for Britain and Europe but not for the States. When they went to put together a box set for release stateside, paying for those songs again became too expensive to consider.

Northern Exposure was off the air before the DVD TV box set revolution came about. If the music has been changed I doubt it has much at all to do with what's contemporary. Probably just stupid artists listening to their agents and finding their music priced right off of the box set entirely.
