Serenity drops to 4th!!!

Per-screen averages (from the top 10)

1) A History of Violence ($563)
An anomaly considering the small number of screens it's on.
2) Flightplan $347
3) Serenity $320
4) The Greatest Game Ever Played $314
5) Corpse Bride $231

These are all skewed figures, seeing as how we're looking at one weekday, of course. For example, on Monday, Serenity's per-screen gross was greater than Flightplan's.

Serenity is not getting bumped out of theatres so long as it's what theatre owners are making the most on per screen. Which is what it's doing considering most theatres don't have A History of Violence.

Per-period averages don't really mean anything (as the link Jasonzzz provies shows). Two things that do matter:

1) Total cumulative gross (what the studio makes on the film)
2) Per-screen averages (Theatre owners determining what movies they keep)

Don't let the media's hyping of daily or weekend grosses get to you, that's not what counts for anything other than perception.

Something else to consider here is that Serenity dropped from $732,000 on Mon to $701,000 on Tuesday. That's not a terrible amount, and as others have said it's still doing well per screen. So, keep talking it up and going back to the theaters, especially on the all-important second weekend. We're a bit shakier than I'd like, but we're still flying.

People, there's a reason why your dietician tells you not to check your weight every day.

It's the overall weekly scores that count most. And Serenity opened at first place for new releases, second overall, with a very good per-theater take.

We're doing okay people. And since that $80 million figure that's been bandied about is for total international gross, okay is all we really have to do.

Besides, I have a feeling that once Universal sees the DVD sales in a few months, that we'll be in the slot for sequels. Theatrical release, more and more, is nothing but loss-leader for home video sales.

It's a sign of the times to come, but wouldn't just bet on it yet. These guys/gals jobs in the movie studios' side of the house depends on their ability to make money from movies with the ability to appeal . They don't get to keep their jobs for making some other division within Universal big money - not yet, anyways... It's true that's how the market is doing and responding, but when was the last time you've seen movie execs and studios getting the right idea on what's going on in the real world?

Ok, don't mean to have a blonde moment here but can someone please explain it to me in dummy-talk about the Box Office gross for Serenity? Like, do I really need to panic or what can I do for there to be a sequel or how much does it exactly need to make a sequel or can it possibly get kicked up a notch once it shown in Europe? And, even its in 4th can it still be made into a sequel? Y'know dumb questions like this. All this numbers and stuff I keep seeing is driving me nuts and I'm a ditiz when it comes to math. So can please someone explain it very simply to me? Like, "Box Office Grosses For Dummies."

There. I vented.

I heard that Serenity has to make $80 million worldwide to get a sequel. If Serenity goes by current trends, it'll only make about $25 million in the US, meaning that it'll need to make $55 million overseas. Although high DVD sales might change Universal's mind if it doesn't make $80 million worldwide.
