I can't find anything on line that says Ron's gay, just Buddhist.

Book's one of the best Christians on TV. I'd put him up against Rev. Camden of 7th Heaven any day.

He stands firm and shows grace and humor.

May have been on the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think the description of Inara's profession as "companion" is much more accurate than prostitution. With a companion, you know you are getting a healthy, educated, and articulate "date" not some gap-toothed dope-head with lord knows what kind of bugs crawling around. Since there will always be people who are willing to pay for sex, it makes sense to make a licensed, regulated profession out of it, like a postal worker or dentist.

Oh yes, you said it, he's perfect!!!! I just adore Book. What you said is right about how he stands firm but with grace and humor (and a mean right hook to the mole guy). He wouldn't be scared to get in the middle of something in order help someone either. Book is also extremely patient and slow to anger. He is a great role model. Being handsome and courteous just adds to his character ("I'm not a grandpa"). I would love to hang out with Book any day. Except for the HAIR incident. muuuhaaaaaa!!!!!

I hope you don't think I was insulting your father. His reaction, as you describe it, clearly indicates that he finds certain attitudes objectionable. I think it's perfectly fair of me to say that I find his attitudes objectionable.

I don't have anything against the man - I've never met him - and he's certainly got a right to his opinions, however distasteful I may find them. But that doesn't mean I want to associate with someone holding those opinions, just as your father no doubt wouldn't care to associate with the likes of me.

Well, I was just joking around. It wasn't my intention to offend or insult (in case you got offended or insulted).

However, that said, I honestly do not think that imagining a character or an actor to be gay is a valid reason to dislike a show. Even if Ron Glass or Book actually were gay, I still don't think it would be a valid reason.

I have a similar disconnect with my folks, Riverbirch. They are somehow just completely not interested in any sort of science fiction or fantasy. Period. My Dad got it in his head that he and Mom should take me to see Aliens when it opened at a theatre in our area when I was growing up -- the only movie I remember seeing on the big screen with them -- and I know I loved it and he loved that I loved it. He himself was rather unimpressed, Mom was speechless, but they seemed to hold the belief that it was somehow a very good thing that I looked to women like Ellen Ripley for my role models. I'm sure I kept up a rolling commentary about the differences between the film and the script-based book with very little input from them the rest of the day.

I haven't been able to get either of them to actually watch any sci-fi/fantasy movie or read a sci-fi/fantasy book since, although they will tolerate one of my movies playing in the background when they come to visit my house. That's all it is, really, they tolerate the sounds in the background of our conversation and any little outbursts that my husband or I make in reference to the media. It's just not their cup of tea. When I recommended Firefly and put on the DVD of Serenity, it turned into background noise for them as soon as the scene changed from Serenity Valley to the silence of space.

Just not their thing. If they did watch it, they'd probably have similar comments to your Dad, except they already like Ron Glass from his 70's cop-show days. (Forgive me, I am just not thinking of the name!)

It's really a small loss, just choose to make other memories with your Dad. You've got plenty of us Browncoats to commune with!

Obviously, your father has his beliefs: I suggest buying him a subscription to Reader's Digest and giving up on him joining you in the 21st century ... him joining you in the 20th is also rather a long shot.

The sheer stupidity of not watching gay actors is why Tom Cruise goes to such lengths to hide his natural born persuasion. All the uptights who love him and his movies would stop going if they had proof he 'bats for the other team'. Again, stupidity.
