Thanks RiverB. I knew I was gonna like him when he stood up to Jayne to protect Dobson, and when he brought Inara some supper instead of giving her a sermon. "...one has leppers."

I guess I was lucky. My mother threw a viewing party for Lost in Space when it premiered in 1965. We ordered pizza and watched Star Trek every single Saturday night when I was a kid.

You gotta know someone else who'll like Firefly?

May have been on the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Perhaps your dad should hang out with my dad. I would never show my dad a Firefly ep. If he saw the ep (Ariel?) with 'nara & the female councilor he'd faint!
They're just from a generation that can be a bit uh.. closed-minded. Doesn't mean they're bad people. I've just learned to accept that. My sis & I steer our parents toward movies that we rate "PA" (parentally approved).

hmm....about the Ron Glass being gay thing.....

Does he think Ron himself is gay or does he just think that his character is since he never married? Just a thought.

Even if Ron himself is, does that change who he is as a person? I think not. I still can't get over how much i love his laugh. So free and unrestrained and hearty. Seems like a genuinely nice guy.

I think one of the problems your father is having is that he is used to TV shows that push some sort of morality (or more often, amorality) onto their viewers.

One of the aspects of Firefly that I most appreciate is that each of the characters has their own distinct worldview, based on their own experiences. Because of that, the show does not push a one sided view of things. For example, your father has an issue with prostitutes being looked up to...so does Mal. Your father doesn't like the anti-religious statements...neither does Book (or Inara). Mal himself would have been bothered by them before Serenity Valley. There certainly are subtle things that are "bad". There are also very unsubtle things that are bad: killing, stealing, etc. But these things are all part of a fictional universe designed to produce dramatic conflict more than societal change.

One telling aspect of the show's relative objectivity is that it has a fan base made up of people from radically different backgrounds and religious and political ideologies. Even more telling is scrolling through the negative reviews of the DVDs on Amazon. Some people complain that the show is just more left-wing B.S., with the glorification of prostitutes, casual sex, and anti-religious sentiments. At the same time, others complain that it's all right-wing, racist, gun nut propaganda. Firefly defaults as one of the most libertarian shows to hit the airwaves, and as such can appeal to and appall a seemingly bizarre range of people from within our Liberal/Conservative paradigm.

I don't think Firefly failed your father, and I don't think your father failed the show either. I think it was all the other crap on TV that is simply a vehicle for pushing the producers' worldview. It's just hard to recognize that Firefly is a little different without seeing more of it.

I'm in much the same boat as many of you. Most of my family (and my family's circle of friends, whom I interact with) has very little tolerance for any type of "fiction" (SF, fantasy, mystery, animé --anything that's not about people just like them). Not that they find anything wrong with it, it's just not their thing. They don't like imagining stuff. Most of them are far more interested in chatting about news, and goings-on in the parish, and the priest's latest sermon. Fiction is just "that stuff" that some people do --it's nothing worth caring about or getting invested in. Most of them can't even distinguish between, say, Stargate SG-1 and Star Wars, let alone the different flavours of Trek.

And yes, I'm still dealing with people who can't comprehend how I can say I hated SW Episode III --they thought I was a sci-fi fan.

My mom in particular just doesn't like anything that's not spelled out and obvious --the greatest compliment she's ever given a TV show is "I could understand what was happening" (and "they have really good imaginations" about Stargate SG-1).

She, for instance, couldn't fathom why I was upset about missing an episode of Dr. Who (one of the repeats from before I started watching). It's just a show.

She'll tolerate things if I'm watching them when she's present, but will do her best to ignore them.

Basically, the only "fans" in my family are me and my goth cousin (how the hell that one happened in this family, I have no clue).

Shiny Update!

I got my father to watch "just one more episode" and so tonight I called him when it was over and said "did you watch it all?" and he didn't even say hello. He just said "Lisa if you get me interested in another show I'll kill you!"

hehe

I said, all innocent-like, "so there was something you liked?"

*silence on the line*

Me: "huh?"

Dad: (very quietly) "I.... kinda... liked it."

I said "Oh it gets better next week when...." and he interrupted with much as my subject line: "GAAAHHHH! I'm doomed!"

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we might possibly have a victory in view....
