The BBC have had 33 confirmed deaths, although that is likely to rise. They only publish confirmed facts by the authorities not 'off-the-record' comments or eye-witness counts.

SerenityPunk, thank you, I've heard from both Emma (the nurse) and Dominic and there both fine, thank you all for you kind words, I feel like I've spent most of the day crying.

I've got to agree with SimonWho I grew up with IRA bombs and it became second nature you carry on around it, they picked the wrong people to bomb.

my mum used to work in London whenthe IRA was pretty rife. But ... with them, she did mention, that they did send coded warnings to the police and whoever. so there was some amount of warnings about that. this .. this was just, horrific.

Which brings a question to mind. Do thunderstorms bother any of you - have you thinking "Bomb!" before "oh... thunder."

I ask, because a friend of mine grew up in Beirut during the war. She's Armenian, so wasn't on either side, but stuck in the middle. To this day, thunderstorms make her twitch and she doesn't attend fireworks displays on the 4th or ever.

actually, i love thunderstorms. the sounds, the rain, the lightening. afterwards it makes everything feel "fresh" again, ..... i'm not looney, honest!

The bombs weren't really frequent enough in London for that sort of association. But we weren't horribly surprised if we came back to a news report of another bombing. Horrified but not surprised.

I'm Northern Irish, and while thunderstorms and fireworks don't bother me, a car-backfiring or similar loud bangs still makes me worry for a second. And I didn't even grow up in the worst of the troubles.

I'm so thankful that all my English uni friends are outside the capital right now. Much love to all those of you who were affected personally, in whatever way.

I think warnings are basically intended to allow bombs to go off while reducing the potential death toll by allowing for evacuation, or at least a quicker response. Provided the warning is given early enough, that is.

Attacks like this, with nor warning at all, are only for one thing, or rather four: chaos, panic, destruction and death.
