Yep, Rel, again I am with you. This doesn't strike me as Al-Qaeda despite the claims. Why would they restrict the power of the bombs? It almost reminds me of the IRA but surely not...

They would have to be stupendously stupid, and I don't think they are quite that dim.

My suspicions, alas, fall upon anti-G8 extremists. The sort of people for whom smashing and fighting isn't enough of a protest.

I can't believe that, there have never been anti-Capitalists that mad, that is too much. The IRA might think it makes some sense because the debate is now doomed - Paisley is the lead negotiator now Trimble has gone. Perhaps some of the 'real' IRA have decided to return to the violence - it would be pretty stupid though but it is whoever did it.

The timing of the bombs points to G8 which suggests an international terrorist organisation. Given that to have any credibility, they'd have to announce themselves pretty much simultaneously with the attacks, I'd have expected to have heard some claim by now. So it's most probably Al-Qaeda.

I suppose we should be grateful that the fatalities aren't in the hundreds as they were in Madrid or the thousands as they were in 9/11. But I'm more depressed by the prospect of our government becoming even more authoritarian. There's no point beating these people if we have to give up our freedom to do so.

Bonus marks to my mother for not realising that I'd have liked a phone call to say she was okay when she was travelling from Liverpool Street along the tubes at pretty much the same time the bombs went off. Managed to track her down at the course she was attending eventually.

London's a tough city. We've had bombing campaigns waged against us for decades and still kept our head held high. We'll weather this storm too. Thoughts and hopes to all those directly caught up in it.

One thing really got me about this.

My friend was supposed to be a train leaving from King's Cross at the time of the KC explosion. She takes that journey every day, at the same time, without fail, to get to her university (she's a trainee nurse).

Today, she overslept. The only time in her entire time at university she's overslept. That faulty alarm clock may just have saved her life.

Very true SW, London will be fine in a couple of weeks. My Dad was caught in an IRA blast in the 80s and went back to work the next day - tough bunch. The worst thing is not being able to get through to people, hoping everyone is alright.

Like you hinted at, this will give Blair carte blanche to bring in the ID cards though. Gorram it! I just hope none of the bombers are involved with Iran otherwise another disgusting war will be on the cards.

I have friends/former colleagues that work in London. There's a couple that I can't get hold of, I'm trying to be positive and blaming the clogged up networks but i'm really worried, one in particular is a nurse at Great Ormond St (just off Russell Square) who travels to work by bus and was supposed to be there this morning and hasn't showed up yet.

I'm praying cos there's nothing else I can do.
