Just look at the cast:
Mal/Buffy -- The troubled, mysterious hero.
Zoe/Xander -- Your first thought is that this is the hero's love interest. But It Can Never Happen.
Wash/Willow -- Deeply loves Zoe/Xander, not really jealous of Mal/Buffy, but troubled on some level by his/her attraction to Zoe/Xander.
Simon/Giles -- The overeducated outsider, who initially appears to be a pompous fool, but turns out to have hidden depths.
Inara/Cordelia -- Need I say more?
River/Dru -- Crazy, but she Knows Things.
Jayne/Spike -- Ok, I admit it, I'm reaching!

that's sorta eerie...

... I guess it's a Joss thing...

Mal/Buffy -- hero(heroine).
Zoe/Xander -- love interest.
Wash/Willow -- conflicting love interest
Simon/Giles -- sage, wiseman
Inara/Cordelia -- eye candy
River/Dru -- religous fanatic
Jayne/Spike -- warrior
That's my way of seeing it. If you look at just about any show, you can break it down to the archtypes.
Now thinking about Spike.......

Actually, I'm thinking it's a ripoff of Angel:
Mal/Angel: Broody hero with dark past
Zoe/Cordy: Loyal to hero; really, really hot
Wash/Lorne: "He is the calm one with a sense of humor"
River/Fred: Crazy; ballerinas from Texas (in RL)
Book/Gunn: Token black guy
Alliance/W&H: Controlling Organization after our hero
--- Joe

River's a religious fanatic? Was it the Vatican government that took her or something?

Meh. If you go looking for similarities in things, you're bound to find them. I mean, I'm the smart, funny, geeky one in my group---does that mean Joss used me to create the concept of Willow?! *gasp* It's like those Lincoln and Kennedy comparisons---if you're searching for something hard enough, you're bound to find it. Not even because it's actually there, but because your mind made it so. *shrug*
Coming to CNN this fall: Buffy the Congressional Lobbyist Slayer, Tuesdays at 8, 7 central!

i guess you could just say that there is a formula of character types used in practically every tv show, it works, so they use it. look at scary movies and teen movies, you can run a parallel with everyone of them just about. they even made movies about it.

Hopefully he's sensible enough to go formulaeic and end up like star trek with
Captain on ship
Ship meets alien/particle
Particle/Alien threatens ship
Captain makes rash decision
Other crewmember helps captain make right decision
Particle/alien not bad, just misunderstood
diplomacy/technobabbel = happy ending
Who do you serve and who do you trust?

I've just realized I had it backwards -- Buffy is a ripoff of Firefly! Yeah, I know Buffy was on first. But you've heard of time warps? This is science fiction after all!

Just thought current posters might be entertained by this old thread.
