There's a difference between buying things that then accumulate later or buying things that are available to everyone that will be an investment for later and buying things that are in short supply with the intention of depriving fans of them just so you can charge them more.

You don't think it's wrong for scalpers to push up the price for the general public? For fans that have tried straight away to get tickets and lost out to scalpers. If Joss or bands etc. didn't care about the fans then they could charge 100 quid+ a ticket easy and make money. But they don't and it's not their attention to put the prices too high because then the average fan can't afford it but they could if they wanted to. So what gives scalpers the right to buy the majority of tickets within the first hour and then charge massively inflated prices for them?

Ticket scalping is a not very nice thing to do. To charge someone 80 quid extra for a ticket just because you were 2 minutes before them in the queue. It's definitely a dishonourable thing to do .

Yep. IMO, scalping is just like the attempted profiteering during the hurricanes in Florida. I hope all the ebay sellers get burned by fake bids and end up having to eat the cost of the tix (and the theater owners open up the leftover seats to *real* browncoats)

Everyone had the exact same chance to get tickets as the next person. I could have not gone to lunch and been around when tickets went on sale. I chose to go to lunch. I obviously had my priorities set so that I would not get tickets.

Everyone also has a chance at those scalped tickets. Don't tell me that someone might not have as much money as the next guy so it's unfair. They made choices that put them in that position. Maybe they wanted to start a family and raise kids. Well there are sacrifices. Money might be one of them.

If I choose to spend my money on overpriced tickets on ebay, I'm not being taken advantage of. I'm buying something I want. It's not even something I need. It's just another choice.

All the scalpers are doing is delivering convenience at a price. So, someone didn't spend the time to refresh fandango every 30 seconds for a week. Instead they chose to spend their time working and making the money to pay a scalper. That's their choice.

I admit that it's not the nicest thing to do in the world, but it's not the hell on earth that some people are making it out to be.

You said that it is the scalpers that jack up the price. How are they jacking it up? I see most of the tickets that go on sale start at cost. It's the volume of people that want the ticket that causes the prices to go up until only one other person is willing to pay for it.

If you took away the scalpers, what do you get? The same problem, too many people and not enough tickets. Except this time the only ticket holders are those few lucky ones who were present for that magical 10 minute window. The guy who wanted the tickets so badly that he would have paid 150 dollars for one ticket misses out.

Hell, if someone offered me 300 dollars I would probably sell it to them. Firefly is worth more than 100 dollars to me. If I didn't get tickets this round, I would have probably gone on ebay and bought one for 100 dollars and still think it was a good deal, because it's worth more than 100 dollars to me. However, it's not worth more than 300. It might be worth more than 300 to someone else who might think that the ticket is worth exactly or more than the money he paid me. That's what Ebay is for. Ebay sets up a free market economy where firefly tickets can go to the most needy person.

Remember, no one is making this person buy the tickets.

Your Hurricane example is a bad one. Don't believe in the media hype.

I can't recall off the top of my head, but I think what occured to Charleston when Hurricane Hugo(?) hit it. The City council passed a law that said the store owners could only sell chainsaws for the same price they always did.

What happened? Well for one, only the people who were fortunate enough to be in the store at the right time or personally knew the store owner got a chainsaw, since they were all sold out.

This left people who were in severe need of a chainsaw, those who weren't there at the right time and didn't know anyone with connections, deprived of what they needed the most.

And you know what's funny? Right outside the city limits, hundreds of vendors set up shop right outside the city, selling their chainsaws at infalted prices. And people still bought those chainsaws, because those people wieghed the costs and benefits of buying a pricy chainsaw and figured out that the benefits still outweighed the costs.

Where did these vendor's and chainsaws come from? From around the country. Do you think that these extra chainsaws would have been magically re-routed from stores in surrounding states if the price weren't worth it for the vendors? Without those chainsaw scalpers, those most needy of chainsaws in charleston would have been screwed since there were no chainsaws.

Of course this being a firefly board, let me give you an example from firefly. Ariel, stealing from the rich and selling to the poor. There is obviously a strong demand for medicine on the outer rims but the beaureaucracy of the alliance prevents this medication from going out to the people in need. Mal and crew are only doing "honest smuggling" bringing goods to those who need them the most. Do you think they would do the same if the demand, the need for those supplies didn't exist? Mal and Co are simply being good capitalists.

My friend and I had a discussion about this today. We got four tickets for the 6/23 screening. One for me and my date, one for him, and one that he is holding for a date. He commented that if he couldn't find a date, he was sure he could find someone else who would want it. Then he paused and said, "And I could probably make a tidy profit off of it."

He thought for a moment, and agreed.

Again, if the ticket gets bought then someone doesn't share the same opinion that they are being jacked. No one is forcing them to buy it at that particular price.
