Spike is the most consistently brilliant character in Buffy, and is equally great in Angel.

Anya was my favourite in Buffy at one point, but she had a low season (unsurprisingly) in series 6.

Andrew was pretty rubbish in series 6, but my favourite in series 7 once he joined the scoobies. The 'Storyteller' episode is fantastic.

Buffy was FAR too whiny to ever be my favourite character. In series 2 and 3 she was up there, but from series 4 onwards she seemed too tired all the time and jaded.

Giles was awsome in patches, but went on a bit sometimes.

In Angel, Doyle was my favourite character. It was a shame he was so short lived. Wesley filled that void brilliantly though, and was my favourite character in Angel from then on. I cried buckets in the last episode.

Oh and in Firefly, the captain isn't my favourite (although he is BRILLIANT still), Kaylee is. She's just so sweet and funny !

Lessee...
First 2 and a half seasons or so, Willow was my favorite (the whole cheating on Oz thing hurt her in my eyes and she never totally regained my favor - she could have, but none of her storylines after really drew me back to her)

I'd say Buffy was probably my favorite from mid Season 3 until Spike joined in Season 4. Then him pretty well all the way to the end.

Angel.. hmmm.. probably Wes overall, but season-by-season:
Season 1: Doyle
Season 2-4: Wes
Season 5: Illyria might have tied Wes by this point, but the story just didn't _finish_ in a proper way, in my eyes.

Firefly, I just can't pick one.

Of course, this is only talking about 'my favorite' - I liked most of the characters all the way through.

All I know (for sure) is that Joss doesn't seem to be in any hurry to work with SMG ever again... and it's pretty much where if you don't get a passing grade from Joss you don't get one from me.

...but she did get a passing grade from Joss - They worked together for seven seasons of Buffy. That's pretty intense. I'm just giving her the benefit of the doubt. Buffy is a great show and Sarah Michelle Gellar was a very significant part of that project. Where they are now in their association/friendship is after the fact. A little time away from each other doesn't seem to bad a thing to do. Even Scorsese and DeNiro take a break from one another on occaisions.

I hold out hope they may work together again in the future.

i think i would plump for spike as best character in buffy - i just thought that the acting was always spot on.

in angel cordy did it for me - always able to tease out of angel something and turn him from just being morose (although there some doubt with the character direction in season 4)

in firefly - hmmm - river is certainly the most interesting -

with all 3 though - i think the strength is in the ensemble - on a commentary on Angel i remember someone talking about a scene between Lorne, Angel and Wes and how unusually long it was for tv - the best thing about all 3 shows is the interaction between the characters. The subtle nature of some of this by the end of buffy and angel is one of things that keeps me going back to them - and i think one of the reasons to be incredibly disappointed that firefly was cancelled and to be vvvvv excited re: the film

'i cannot abide useless people'

Buffy without a doubt, from Prophecy girl onwards she was the reason I watched the show, the other characters were interesting as well but primarily because of their relationships with Buffy.

After 7 years+ of working together SMG and Joss probably both needs a well deserved break from Buffy and a chance to shine in the world of filmmaking, I hope they are both equally successful.

On Angel Wesleys development from the nerdy ex-watcher to crazy Wesley really made the show, Angel just was a bit one note and Angelus was underutilized.

In Firefly it was Jayne's lines that made the show for me.

I don't really dislike Buffy herself but she's not the best character. I love Anya and Andrew, and Spike and Faith are also brilliant. I think they are the ones with the best one-liners.

I find myself laughing over and over again when Andrew says in Storyteller "In my plan, we are BELTLESS!"

Buffy: Spike and Anya

Spike and Anya could always be counted on to lighten up some episodes. I remember one not-so-good season 5 ep of Buffy that I was getting bored with until Spike came out of Buffy's basement. The look on Buffy's face and Spike's explanation was priceless, and completely turned that ep. around for me. Anya's the same way.

Angel: Wes, Fred, and Angel

Wes and Fred had two of the best character arcs on the show. In particular, what they did with Wes was nothing short of brilliant. From nerdy Watcher to truly memorable badass. Brilliant! And Angel finally developed as a character. I didn't like the character on Buffy, but he really came into his own on his series.

Firefly: Mal and Jayne

I don't really know why I like them more than the others...just do.

On Buffy, I'd have to say Spike. On Angel, Wes.

What made both of these shows great was that they were all really terrific characters and each had their moments to shine. I have to say, I really enjoyed all of the characters and when one of them died I was really disappointed. But fortunately with these show, if they died they'd often come back!

My favourite character on Buffy was acually Buffy during seasons 1-5, but my opinion of the character changed in the last two seasons. Overall, I'd say my fav character is Xander closely followed by Faith and Buffy would be third. I'm not as much of an Angel fan as a Buffy one, but Wes was my fav on that show.
