This is obviously a difficult question to answer right now. There are several good suggestions and good reasons for them. I'm just hoping that, in the year 2010, I can answer it by saying, definitively, that the best trilogy is "Serenity" and its two sequels. That would be soooo great.

I won't even mention that I like Star Wars 1-3. I guess I'm stuck with the (lack of) tastes I've got. Please note that I am old enough to have seen 4-6 in the theatre.

Has anyone seen Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy, Red, White and Blue? I've only seen Red and Blue, but I enjoyed them very much.

my absolute favorite line in the entire trilogy of die hard movies. i know the one that is probably most quoted, but this one is just such sweet timing to me.

Or how about the Gidget movies? Or the Tammy movies? I don't see them on anyone's lists.

In my complete 16 year old pop culture love, I have to Vote Mighty Ducks and Scream. Mighty Ducks as, next to the Original SW trilogy, was my favorite (we're talking ages 6-8 here).

Scream I've recently been exposed to and I enjoyed it because I liked how the three killers were all interconnected and came Full Circle at the end.

My all-time favorites though are tied, Star Wars 4-6 at the top, with Back to the Future and Indiana Jones tied at second.

I agree that LotR ends up being head and shoulders above all others,
but it was based on three great books so it is more of a complete package...

talking about series based on great source material:
shouldn't we mention Harry Potter?
(again, more than three...but one of the best serials ever)

Does anyone find Die Hard 3 to be less 'realistic' than the other two? Like when they fall 20 or so feet onto a steel plate on that ship? I don't know about many of you, but my bones BREAK from decceleration traumas like that.
And where's Bonnie Bedelia???

It's interesting to note the number of trilogies mentioned here that:

a) dropped significantly in quality for the third part; SW:RotJ, Godfather III, Naked Gun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Mighty Ducks (well, I've heard)
b) aren't trilogies. I move that any tetralogies be stricken from the record. I also move that anyone who uses the 'word' Quadrilogy be stricken with something blunt.

Perhaps I could vote for Baz Lurhman's Red Curtain trilogy (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge!) if we're allowed to use a director's bracket for grouping films.
