trilogies

after some general talk about the merits of back to the future, indiana jones and lord of the rings, i thought i would ask what people feel is the greatest movie trilogy of all time? base your judgement on anything. continuity, fun to watch, epic scope, best story, good effects, guilty pleasure etc.

some potential choices (these are the only ones i could think of right off the bat):
lord of the rings
star wars (ep 4-6)
star wars (ep 1-3) - even though ep 3 is not out yet
indiana jones
back to the future
the matrix

some more less notable choices:
american pie
karate kid
blade
lethal weapon (okay, it is 4 movies, but we can stretch the rules a little bit)
rocky (again, stretching the rules and if we believe some people's opinions, there were only 4 rocky movies because rocky 5 never happened, right? )

of course, if you can think of others, feel free to add them to the party!

my choice? i have no idea.

How about, The Godfather and Evil Dead. Especially evil dead...also, and this is more obscure, but if any of can find them, the Mr. Belvedere movies with Cliff Webb. Sitting Pretty, Mr. Belvedere Goes to College and Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell. Fantastic movies that are rarely shown on TV and are not available on DVD.

IMO, it's a bit unfair. LOTR deserves a class of its own, and the rest can sort it out amongst themselves.

I too put LOTR in a class of it's own. I see it as one film in three parts. To date, I think it is the finest film ever made.

If you confine it to sci-fi/fantasy, based on strength of all three, it would have to be LOTR. Second for me would be Back to the Future. I seem to find weakness in one installment each of the other choices.
Having said all that, my choice for best overall has to be The Godfather Trilogy.

Ditto. It really is one movie - just released in three parts because most people wouldn't be willing to sit still in a theatre for eleven hours (running time of the extended edition) straight.

It's hard to pick a greatest trilogy because they all have weak links - one (or in the case of "The Matrix", two) of the movies isn't all that good. Of course, the first one is always good, or there wouldn't have been any more.... I'm going to go with LOTR anyway for best trilogy - even though it's really one very, very long movie.

I'm not so convinced the LOTR is in league of its own - I thought Two Towers was substantially less good than the others - the interminable elves at Helms Deep scene - pah!

Anyone gonna suggest the Die Hard movies? - all three of those are pretty damn fine!! (or is that jsut me?)

Okay, I have to agree with the Die Hard movies. I loved all of them, great action and humor in all three of them.

As far as LOTR goes,it is one story in 3 movies. I don't think you can count that as a trilogy.

I'll have to go with The Godfather, though. Hands down.

Oh come on. How can it not be the original Star Wars Trilogy (IV - VI)? They defined what movie trilogies were meant to be. I don't know which movie you guys would say is the weak link but I don't see which one it would be. Maybe IV just because we all know the characters so well we no longer need all the exposition. That trilogy had the action, wit, and drama to stand out from any of the rest.

Reckon most people would agree that Return of the Jedi is the weak one cos its just so damn sappy!!

Plus the whole forcely presence of Anakin and Obi Wan with their arms around each other (I ask you!) at the end....

But you're probably right - good as Indiana Jones and Die Hard are - its gotta be Star Wars!!!
