I still can't help but think we could have saved everybody a lot of time if we did exactly this one month earlier when I first suggested we do it. It was exactly one month to the day before we pulled our first two over there that I said it's what we should be doing.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy laid more mines in the Strait of Hormuz this week, according to a U.S. official and a source with knowledge of the issue.
Why it matters: The military standoff in the world’s most important oil chokepoint is escalating, with Iran laying mines and attacking commercial ships on one side and the U.S. tightening its naval blockade on the other.
• After being briefed on the new developments, President Trump ordered the U.S. Navy on Truth Social on Thursday to “shoot and kill” any Iranian boats laying mines with “no hesitation."
The big picture: New mines in the strait could deepen what the International Energy Agency has already called the largest oil supply disruption in the history of the global market — bigger than the 1970s oil shocks.
• Roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the strait in peacetime. Traffic has collapsed to single digits on most days, down from more than 100 ships daily.
• This is the second time Iran has mined the strait since the war began. It remains unclear whether all the mines from the first round have been found and cleared.

The billion-barrel Hormuz oil shock is about to crash demand

Bloomberg reports:
“Because there is still no visible disaster” in the West, “people think everything is okay, and a bit higher pump prices are the only impact,” said Cuneyt Kazokoglu, FGE’s director of energy transition. But demand destruction “will come and is coming in waves. Asia was first in line, Africa is the next one. Europe has already started talking about the lack of some fuels and feeling the price impact.”
Ultimately, in a market where demand needs to adjust down to match lower supply, oil prices may be what drive that recalibration.
In extreme scenarios, where price alone forces the market to balance, FGE estimates that crude oil would need to surge to $250 a barrel.
The Strait of Hormuz oil shock has yet to crash demand as the rich world borrows from its stocks and pays up to secure supply. Traders are now sounding the alarm that a harsh adjustment is coming.
The longer the vital oil channel doesn’t reopen, traders say, the more consumption is going to have to recalibrate lower to align with supply that’s dropped at least 10%. And for that to happen, people will have buy less, either through prices they can’t afford, or government intervention to force consumption down.
A billion barrels of supply loss is already all-but guaranteed — more than double the emergency inventories that governments released not long after the conflict began at the end of February. Buffers are being used up fast, helping to keep a lid on oil prices for now. But with the closure now in its ninth week, demand destruction that started in less obvious sectors like petrochemicals in Asia, is quietly spreading to everyday markets the world over.
“Demand destruction is happening in places that are not visible pricing centers,” Saad Rahim, chief economist of trader Trafigura Group, told the FT Commodities Global Summit in Lausanne this week. “That adjustment is already happening, but if this continues, it has to get larger and larger. We’re at a critical inflection point.”
The most dependent industries and markets — including petrochemicals plants in Asia and the Middle East, and shipments of liquefied petroleum gas, a vital cooking fuel in India — saw an immediate hit when the US and Israel first attacked Iran on Feb. 28.
Now, with a stalemate between US President Donald Trump and his Iranian adversaries dragging on, the impact is increasingly shifting west — and to products that are central to consumers’ everyday lives.

Trump Blinked

The Iranians stared down the USA, and as of now, it is the USA that has blinked.
What Trump has failed to understand is that other states are not as weak in relative terms as US domestic institutions have shown themselves to be. He has been able to use the power of the federal government, in particular its control over vast amounts of money, to browbeat corporations, universities, law firms, etc, to do what he wanted because he threatened their access to money.
When Trump tries to act similarly toward other nations, he fails. His tariff bonanza was one great exception to that, but it stretches to everything else, from how he is treating European states to his Venezuela policy to his war with Iran. With the possible exception of Venezuela (which, btw, is under the control of a group probably more hard-line than before), his bullying and threats have undermined the US position.
Because Trump can compartmentalize, he does not get this. He believes he can make threats, such as to invade Greenland, and then back down/pivot and tell himself that no harm was done, that it was just a big game, and that people will still treat him nicely (which they will because he is President of the USA).
So, while Trump is causing generational damage to the US standing in the world, which Americans do not fully understand, he is also revealing his weakness to the world and other states are taking his measure. Sadly, Iran seems to be one of those states, as we have seen over the last few days.
