This is a laudatory standard, which Mr. Trump deserves credit for setting. But six months into his presidency, he deserves more blame for failing to meet it. He has delivered no peace, whether in Europe or in the Middle East. His strike on Iran sums up his struggles: a frantic, fumbling attempt at negotiation cut short by a risky attack that sets the stage for further war.
Year after year, the United States stations its military forces on geopolitical fault lines in Europe, Asia and the Middle East simultaneously. And year after year, it gets exactly what it has placed itself to receive, inheriting distant conflicts as its own and lurching from crisis to crisis at times of its many adversaries’ choosing.
If Mr. Trump is to reduce the country's exorbitant defense burdens, as he claims to want, he must take the United States out of the position that guarantees them. But for all of Mr. Trump's talk, and his critics' fears, it remains uncertain whether he will even really try.

Why the White House Backed Down From Its First Big Education Cuts
“After months of being told to ‘wait it out,’ districts are now supposed to pick up the pieces and act like everything’s fine,” Steven Johnson, the superintendent of Fort Ransom School District, in southeastern North Dakota, told me. “I’ve got to be honest—this doesn’t sit well out here. You can’t freeze money that was already allocated, leave schools hanging through hiring season and budget planning, and then expect us to just be grateful when it finally shows up. Rural folks don’t like being jerked around.”
While the funds were frozen, an informal alliance emerged between rural and big-city educators who pushed back against the president. Lawmakers from some of the reddest parts of the country opposed the funding pause too, an early warning signal to the White House as it weighs plans that might further disrupt the public-education system.

In Texas, nearly 70% of rural hospitals may reduce services
Residents living in rural areas of Texas could see their access to quality healthcare change significantly over the course of the next few years.
Texas has seen 20 rural hospitals close down since 2010, according to the Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals (TORCH), and due to Trump’s latest Medicaid cuts, even more are expected to shut their doors.
A total of 108 rural hospitals are projected to reduce or eliminate essential services. That’s equal to 69% of rural hospitals in the state.
That’s followed by 87 (56%) rural hospitals now at risk of closing.
As for immediate concerns, 22 hospitals are now under imminent risk of closure.
Overall, Texas only has 156 rural inpatient hospitals. According to Texas State Rep. Gary VanDeaver, rural hospitals in the state face financial instability, which has led to closures and reduced services.
“Factors such as low patient volumes, regulatory burdens, and insufficient Medicaid reimbursement exacerbate these challenges,” VanDeaver wrote in a statement.
The American Hospital Association projects that Trump’s Medicaid cuts will result in $19.9K
loss of rural Medicaid coverage in Texas through 2034. That would cause a $1.047 million loss of federal funds allocated to rural hospitals over the next decade.
Texans who depend on food stamps also have something to worry about: This state would be the fourth-largest state to be impacted by new food stamp rules. As many as 1,514 individuals are expected to lose all access to SNAP benefits, according to the Urban Institute.
