23 Years Later, One Reason Firefly Got Cancelled Now Feels Like Unthinkable Sabotage

Plus, it was sometimes aired in its regular timeslot, and sometimes not.
The ep that got me hooked was "Out of Gas". It really demonstrated the milieu that the characters inhabited, and the hard lives they had, and hard decisions they had to make. After that, "The Train Job". But IIRC they were aired later in the season.
Yanno, it's funny, but some shows just have a hugely outsized influence. Hard to believe, but Star Trek only ran for a single season. Firefly is another. There've been many shows influenced or inspired by Star Trek, but AFAIK nobody has been able to re-create the rich texture that was Firefly, not even Whedon.
I'm still sad to think about "what might have been".

That must have been weird watching it the first time around. Easy to see why people got so mad about it being canceled, especially after how it got treated on the original run.
My introduction to Firefly was when I was living with my brother for a while and he was telling me all about the show about 5 years after it came out. I was sleeping on the couch and when I woke up he was in the middle of Our Ms. Reynolds and I said something like who is this angel?
By that point my brother probably watched it 5 times, and it was something my old man had already loved before it got cancelled and long forgotten about. He was too old to go online and bitch about it. 
We were just talking about firefly the other day and how there were still people who would love to see it brought back. We agreed that too much time has passed and they couldn't bring it back anymore.
I said... besides.... It wouldn't be the same now anyway. They'd wokify it all up... everything would be dark and brooding. Everyone on the show wouldn't trust each other. Probably retcon Wash and destroy his legacy by having Zoe tearfully telling the story about how Wash used to beat her and the dinosaur thing was just an act.
Yanno... the usual crap we've all come to expect.
I said they could rename it to DiversiFirefly.

I have to say, watching Shatner ham it up was sometimes a bit cringeworthy. My favorite was Mr Spock. Some of the movies were pretty good, but I can't claim to have watched every one.

The thing that I REALLY liked about Firefly was the juxtaposition/ contradiction of elements: space travel and cowboys. Big corporations and hustlers. Highly developed planets and hardscrabble settlements. Well developed police/ security and lawlessness. People who were moral and people who weren't. English and Chinese. Slavery and ... not. JUST LIKE TODAY.
It's like Whedon put these elementson small bits of paper, tossed them in a box arranged them at random. Like real life.
