Charlotte Slente: The Danish Refugee Council is active in around 40 countries around the world—primarily countries where we see large humanitarian crises and displacement crises, because we are a displacement-mandated organization, which means that we work on these great, big contracts. And among the 40 countries that we are present in, we’ve been hit in 22. It’s across the globe in different environments and a little bit random, depending on where the U.S. funding falls.
The U.S. was our second-biggest donor—20 percent of our income was from the U.S. We’ve been hit in many countries in Africa, we’ve been hit in Latin America, we’ve also been hit in Asia, and in Ukraine. It’s been quite a bumpy road.

Just a few short weeks ago the prospects for American democracy looked bleak. Donald Trump was elected despite the events of January 6th and his clear threats of retribution against those who had tried to hold him in check. The powerful and extremely wealthy lined up behind him on the inauguration dais and contributed vast sums to his inauguration party. Democrats were stunned, despondent and disorganized. The stock market was climbing. And many of us expected Trump, the ultimate nepo baby, to claim that the solid economy he inherited from Biden was his own handiwork.
Suddenly the march to authoritarian rule is looking much less unstoppable. Trump’s vindictive over-reach has quickly sparked widespread outrage within many institutions, including universities and the courts, and among regular Americans. Polls suggest that the public is making a hard turn against Trump’s tactics.
Moreover, the economy, which was arguably the decisive issue in November, has rapidly turned into a huge Trump liability. It’s actually incredible how fast public views of the economy have soured:

Just to be clear, I am very much not in the camp that urges Democrats to focus on kitchen-table issues and ignore the Trump regime’s other outrages. Polls tell us that Americans aren’t as ignorant and self-centered as some political consultants would have their clients believe. Many ordinary people are outraged at the news of renditions of legal residents to gulags in El Salvador. The public overwhelmingly opposes Trumpist defunding of medical research and attacks on universities, as well as the DOGEing of Social Security.
Democrats shouldn’t give Trump a pass on any of his destructive actions. They should, instead, tell voters that stripping people of their civil rights, annihilating education and science, destroying U.S. trade and poisoning our international relationships has one unifying goal: to destroy civil society in the name of MAGA.
That said, I believe that the administration’s metastasizing economic catasrophe is a critical development.
As I read the history of successful autogolpes, politicians who win an election and then effectively destroy the democracy that elevated them, it is almost always the case that their consolidation of power rests upon the perception of economic achievement.
Take the case of Hitler. And spare me the fake outrage: We’re well past the point where you can say that MAGA/Nazi comparisons are illegitimate.
Many people are probably aware that the Nazi takeover of Germany was made possible by the collapse of the German economy between 1929 and 1933 — a slide into deep depression that was partly due to the Brüning government’s refusal to depart from gold-standard orthodoxy. But I’m not sure how many realize that Hitler was able to consolidate power in part because his heterodox economic policies led to a strong recovery and a rapid fall in unemployment, shown at the top of this post.
Somewhat similarly, Viktor Orban took power in Hungary during the euro crisis, which led to high unemployment and painful austerity imposed by the International Monetary Fund. He was able to consolidate one-party rule in Hungary in part because he ended up presiding over a long period of economic recovery:

I listened to a very left-wing Canadian, Matt Ehret, talk about Canada, and what he said was surprising. The opinion that came thru, over and over, is that Canada is a "fake country" with a fake Constitution. The Canadian constitution supposedly mandates that Canada be managed for the good of the crown, and that Canada has been managed like that throughout most of its history. According to him, despite its vast natural resources, Canada has been kept in a pristine, "no development" state, and only Alberta shows a spark of vitality. "Here We Are Again": Federal District Courts Piling On Injunctions To Stop Trump

Those words of Senior U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick may be the only uncontested line in his opinion this week, enjoining the Trump Administration from withholding federal funds to “sanctuary jurisdictions.”
In President Trump’s first term, efforts to implement sweeping changes on immigration and other issues were met by a slew of injunctions.
In 2017, one of those orders was from Judge Orrick, an Obama appointee in San Francisco.
Trump has already faced a record number of national injunctions by district courts.
His administration has objected to forum- and judge-shopping by political opponents by bringing the majority of such challenges in overwhelmingly Democratic states like California.
Such injunctions did not exist at the founding, and only relatively recently became the rage among district court judges. Under President George W. Bush, there were only six such injunctions, which increased to 12 under Obama.
Both Democratic and Republican presidents have complained about district judges tying down presidents like so many judicial Lilliputians. However, when Trump came to office, the taste for national injunctions became a full-fledged addiction. Trump faced 64 such orders in his first term.
When Biden and the Democrats returned to office, it fell back to 14. That was not due to more modest measures. Biden did precisely what Trump did in seeking to negate virtually all of his predecessors’ orders and then seek sweeping new legal reforms. He was repeatedly found to have violated the Constitution, but there was no torrent of preliminary injunctions at the start of his term.
Now, however, with less than 100 days in office, Trump 2.0 has already surpassed that number for the entirety of Biden’s term.
The Supreme Court bears some of the blame for this. Although a majority of justices, including liberal Justice Elena Kagan, have complained about district courts’ issuance of national injunctions, the high court has done little to rein in district court judges. On May 15, the justices are poised to consider the issue in a case involving birthright citizenship. Many hope that the justices will bring what they have consistently failed to supply to lower courts: clarity and finality.
Some judges have already seen their stays lifted by appellate courts.
However, in just one day this week, three more major injunctions were issued on sanctuary cities, voter registration, and deportations.
Some of these orders appear premature and overbroad.
Take Judge Orrick’s order. Again, Trump is targeting cities offering sanctuary to unlawful immigrants as imposing high costs on the country, including increasing burdens for federal programs and grants to these cities.

“I’d like to say that that is reality,” Trump said. “Probably I do create some things, but I didn’t create that.”
Never mind that the votes had been counted, the court cases concluded. He was still trying to shift perceptions, make a sale, bend the world to his will.

These orders — which largely flew under the radar — will effectively wipe out spending safeguards with potential effects that are hard to overstate considering that President Trump announced he will expand the defense budget to a breathtaking $1 trillion, and that the secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, is no counterweight to politically driven spending.
“To summarize, the new executive orders purport not merely to change or improve regulations, but to simply eliminate most of the existing procurement rules developed through years of oversight processes and outside scrutiny. They effectively undo procurement safeguards put in place after tremendous waste was exposed during the Cold War. In their place, the executive orders would elevate certain procedures that allow the government to spend unlimited sums without competition — the so-called “other transactions” process that need not be competed and that circumvents safeguards put in place to protect tax dollars. The Executive Orders say there should be a “first preference” for other transactions processes, which is like having a “first preference” for bringing a pistol with no safety to compete in a boxing match.”

The Longest 100 Days
The clash between Donald Trump’s determination to rule and his inability to govern has set the country on an unsustainable course.

Shortly before taking office, Donald Trump promised his supporters that he’d have “the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history.” And, well, it certainly hasn’t been ordinary.
Historians tend to rate presidencies by the breadth of their accomplishments, on a scale ranging from ineffectual to transformative. The classic measuring stick for hundred-day achievements is the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The frenetic first stretch of the New Deal featured a raft of major legislation that established new financial regulations and ambitious public-works projects, helping the economy begin to recover from the Great Depression.
Judged against Roosevelt’s record, the first 100 days of the second Trump term would be deemed a miserable failure. The president has passed no major legislation, and his economic interventions have had the opposite effect of Roosevelt’s, injecting uncertainty into a healthy recovery and seeding an economic crisis.
Yet his presidency has still been consequential. In just a few months, Trump has smashed democratic norms, crippled the federal bureaucracy, and realigned America against its traditional friends. Because Trump’s goals are so historically aberrant, the traditional measure of presidential achievement is of hardly any use. His Carter-esque record as legislator and economic steward stands in stark contrast to his Lenin-esque record in stamping out opposition. For the president’s ruling claque, the effect is a triumph. For nearly everybody else, it portends ruin.
In an alternate reality, Trump’s 2024 victory paved the way for a traditionally successful presidency with broad popularity and concrete policy achievements. After the election, his polling numbers shot up, and numbed Democrats retreated into self-doubt; some of them concluded that their best path forward lay in working with the new president. Congress formed a bipartisan DOGE caucus of members eager to eliminate inefficiencies in government. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, at the time perhaps the Democratic Party’s best-positioned 2028 presidential contender, sent a letter to Trump offering cooperation.
In the real world, despite the obvious opportunity, Trump never tested the possibilities for constructive engagement. The president laid bare his thought process in his speech to Congress in early March. “I look at the Democrats in front of me, and I realize there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy,” he complained. “I could find a cure to the most devastating disease—a disease that would wipe out entire nations—or announce the answers to the greatest economy in history.”
Here he was engaged in projection. The available evidence suggests that Trump could never imagine supporting a piece of legislation proposed by a political opponent merely because it advanced some worthwhile policy goal. (That is why passing an infrastructure bill and bolstering domestic manufacturing of silicon chips ranked among Trump’s highest stated priorities, until President Joe Biden passed these ideas into law, at which point they became disasters to be repealed.) And so, Trump naturally assumed, neither would the Democrats.
Instead of working within the system, he set out to crush the opposition. He has placed seemingly every lever of state power in the hands of unprincipled loyalists and has used the threat of investigation, prosecution, and punitive defunding to extort media owners, law firms, and universities into compliance. He has attempted to establish, in his immigration-enforcement powers, the ability to disappear people who may or may not have committed crimes, and may or may not even reside in the country illegally, brushing aside court orders to stop.

Mark Carney wins Canadian election

Yesterday’s election in Canada was a bit closer than polls predicted. Nonetheless, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party, which appeared doomed just two months ago, won a solid victory. And the credit goes mainly to Donald Trump.
If Trump had merely made economic demands on our northern neighbor, Canada might have acquiesced, although it’s not clear what concessions it could have made. But by repeatedly insisting that Canada must become the 51st state, he made any hint of Trumpiness toxic in Canadian politics. Hence the stunning defeat for Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader (who lost his own seat in Parliament.)
The Canadian election, then, demonstrates why Trumpist trade policy, and foreign policy in general, is doomed to catastrophic failure. Trump isn’t trying to drive tough substantive bargains. Mainly, he seems to want to indulge in narcissism, demanding that other nations humiliate themselves so he can put on a display of dominance. And America doesn’t have remotely enough leverage, even against Canada, to make such demands. You could say that Trump is a reverse Godfather, making offers other countries can’t accept.
Consider the state of negotiations — or, actually, non-negotiations, since talks appear to have broken down — with Japan, another country Trump appears to have thought he could bully. Japan does sell a lot to the United States and might have been willing to offer something to preserve its access to our market.
But reports indicate that Japanese representatives sent to Washington left without accomplishing anything because they found Trump’s people impossible to deal with. Yesterday’s election in Canada was a bit closer than polls predicted. Nonetheless, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party, which appeared doomed just two months ago, won a solid victory. And the credit goes mainly to Donald Trump.
If Trump had merely made economic demands on our northern neighbor, Canada might have acquiesced, although it’s not clear what concessions it could have made. But by repeatedly insisting that Canada must become the 51st state, he made any hint of Trumpiness toxic in Canadian politics. Hence the stunning defeat for Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader (who lost his own seat in Parliament.)
The Canadian election, then, demonstrates why Trumpist trade policy, and foreign policy in general, is doomed to catastrophic failure. Trump isn’t trying to drive tough substantive bargains. Mainly, he seems to want to indulge in narcissism, demanding that other nations humiliate themselves so he can put on a display of dominance. And America doesn’t have remotely enough leverage, even against Canada, to make such demands. You could say that Trump is a reverse Godfather, making offers other countries can’t accept.
Consider the state of negotiations — or, actually, non-negotiations, since talks appear to have broken down — with Japan, another country Trump appears to have thought he could bully. Japan does sell a lot to the United States and might have been willing to offer something to preserve its access to our market.
But reports indicate that Japanese representatives sent to Washington left without accomplishing anything because they found Trump’s people impossible to deal with. I agree with SIX. Canada has been free-riding on the USA, and I suspect that aside from oil, timber, fishing, mining and agriculture (which aren't really industries per se) Canada's biggest manufacturing sector is the auto industry, which the USA exported north of the border under NAFTA.
Be that as it may ... I really don't know anything about Poilievre and what his promises were, but I worry that Canadians just jump into a globalist central banker's tender embrace. Seems like Canadians votes based on USA politics.

Usually I vote NDP. But they can't break that glass ceiling in Federal politics like they can by province. And no way was I going to vote Conservative.
I like Mr. Singh but I don't know what will happen to the NDP now. They have to find a way to regroup.
Apparently the Liberals didn't get a majority government and since the NDP by the looks of things got wiped off the map. That means they will have to work with the Bloc. Conservatives are the Loyal Opposition.

Just over a month ago, President Donald Trump was more popular than he was at any point in his first term. This was especially troubling because his administration was proving to be even more incompetent, corrupt, and authoritarian this time around. He was busy gutting the civil service, defying judicial orders, and creating migrant concentration camps abroad—but Americans didn’t seem to mind. Trump’s surprisingly resilient approval ratings had Democrats wondering, after his election gains with people of color and in blue redoubts like New York City and Detroit, whether anything could pull him down.
What a difference a month makes. “Liberation Day,” Trump’s announcement of massive tariffs on pretty much every other nation in the world, may go down as the biggest own goal in American—and perhaps global—political history. Trump is now less popular than any president has been at the 100-day mark in 80 years. In a new NPR survey that asked respondents to grade Trump (like the schoolchild that he is), 45 percent—including more than half of independents—gave him an “F,” while just 23 percent gave him an “A.”
This is a shocking slide, and Trump seems to know it: He mused on Monday about launching criminal prosecutions against pollsters. But Trump’s chances of bouncing back are remarkably slim. That 23 percent of NPR respondents who gave him an “A” may very well represent his floor. If things continue on this trajectory, his approval rating may fall to that number, making him the least popular president in the country’s history.
In the very best scenario—for Trump, at least—“Liberation Day” would be analogous to what the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan was for Joe Biden’s popularity. After that debacle, Biden’s popularity rapidly slid and never recovered. Americans may have wanted to leave Afghanistan, but they clearly had expectations that we would not leave the country in the Taliban’s hands and strand many Afghans who had aided the American occupation. The fallout (and the relentlessly negative media coverage) led to the impression that Biden was weak, infirm, and incapable of leading—a perception that would ultimately doom not only his presidency but the Democrats’ hopes of holding onto the White House.
“Liberation Day” seems to have woken a lot of Americans up to something they had inexplicably forgotten: Trump is the same profoundly incompetent and stupid person who, just a few years ago, they did not like very much. Trump may be counting on his trade war somehow working, but much would have to go right for his popularity to recover. For one, that trade war would have to deliver what Trump promises it will: mass prosperity, an end to the income tax, and the return of well-paying manufacturing jobs—which pretty much everyone, aside from Trump and a handful of slavish loyalists, agrees is impossible. He would also have to somehow turn back time and restore the pre-Covid economy that many Americans remembered so fondly when they voted for him a second time. This is also impossible. He would probably also have to end the war in Ukraine—but in a way that doesn’t give Russia everything it wants, which is Trump’s current, and truly artless, negotiating position—and somehow repair America’s absolutely destroyed global reputation. None of that is going to happen, either.
It’s more likely that everything is going to get a lot worse. Trump’s approval ratings are historically awful right now, even though he has managed to delay the worst effects of his trade war. But he is still stubbornly clinging to tariffs, which inevitably will cause product shortages and rising costs in the near future—not to mention a potential recession, the odds of which are worryingly high.
A lot of other things will likely hurt his popularity too. Trump seems to believe that ending the war in Ukraine will win him a Nobel peace prize, but while Americans may have

Russia would never nuke Canada and Canada would not need to build nukes to retaliate against Russia if Trump would leave military relationships the way things were before January 2025. Or Trump can do as he is now doing, which is announcing that the US military isn't protecting anybody any more as long as Trump doesn't feel like doing it, which depends on Trump's fluctuating moods. Canada and Trump don't know how he will feel when Russia nukes Canada. Canada can't depend on Trump to act responsibly, consistently, wisely, or sensibly. Everything is in unknowable flux with Trump around.

Another thing somebody figured out about "Reduce income taxes to stimulate purchases at home, and use tariffs to replace them with" is that tariffs are paid by Americans, not by people in Guyana, and income taxes are also paid by Americans. Raising tariffs (it is a tax on Americans) and lowering income taxes will only shift who in America pays taxes. Reducing income taxes will stimulate purchases by rich people who paid high taxes before Trump's scheme of lower taxes on the wealthy.

There are 42 House Republicans who won their seats last November by 15 points or less (see below). These are the most vulnerable Republicans. Meanwhile, Democrats have been outperforming their districts by an average of over ten points in special elections so far this year.
Combine these data points with the growing backlash and as you can imagine, some House Republicans in swing districts (and not-normally-considered swing districts) are understandably nervous about ripping healthcare coverage away from up to 60% of their constituents (that’s not a typo . . . check out CA-22).
The optics look even worse for Republicans when Democrats have been successfully calling attention to the huge numbers of children, the elderly and the disabled who rely on Medicaid.
So, what’s a Republican House member to do? They have to have their massive tax cuts for millionaires & billionaires, after all; that’s not even up for debate in their minds!
The “solution” to Republicans’ problem in their eyes:
Republicans are out there proclaiming that “able-bodied” adults don’t deserve coverage, that the 90% federal match rate for the expansion that made it financially viable for states sucks resources from “traditional” Medicaid beneficiaries (it doesn’t), that defunding the expansion is just cutting “waste, fraud, and abuse” — that is, that low-income adults without affordable access to employer insurance are effectively human waste.

Trump's Michigan "rally" of less than 3,000 people in a half filled arena was yet another disaster, as most of the crowd left half way through, and Trump spent 90 minutes defending his failed first 100 days by attacking, what else, "communist left wing judges" and changing his tariff policy while literally on Air Force One on the way to the rally to pander to the skimpy crowd.
I'm not aware of anybody campaigning or any pending election.
People got shit to do like working on a Tuesday. Republican voters usually work for a living.
I'm the exception to the rule.
It's easy to fill up arenas for AOC when you have a huge pool of angry unemployed people with nothing better to do that you can bus in.

The week I became a father, two things happened. Fires engulfed the Amazon, and a man who made his living as a columnist for the largest newspaper in the country complained to a university provost that a professor had called him a bedbug on the Internet. This was the world into which I welcomed my first child: a place where people with power behaved like children while the planet burned.
Five and a half years later, our civilizational outlook has not improved. It is not just the fires, floods, zoonotic diseases, and other insignia of ecological emergency. It is also the discomfiting spectacle of a leadership class so extravagantly unfit for the task at hand. Incompetent rulers are nothing new. They are one of human history’s main themes. What feels more specific to our time is the extent to which our leaders have responded to a moment of severe and proliferating crisis by regressing into a childlike state, and encouraging their followers to do the same.
In 1933, the year that Hitler took power in Germany, the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich proposed that fascism begins at home, in the domestic sphere. The first authoritarian state is the family, he argued, ruled by the father. Here children learn the submission to authority—and the identification with it—that makes a good fascist subject. The idea proved influential for later thinkers trying to map the psychology of authoritarianism, and it has an obvious kernel of truth. In our own extremely desublimated era, one doesn’t have to look very far for verification: “It’s like Daddy arrived and he’s taking his belt off,” a ruddy Mel Gibson gushed the other day on Fox News about Trump’s visit to Los Angeles, during which he had scolded Karen Bass, the city’s mayor and a Black woman, at a press conference.
But Trump is poorly cast for the part of patriarch. While he glowers in his official portraits, his political style is more silly than stern. He babbles. He is a creature of impulse and instinct, fickle and dysregulated. His humor is that of the schoolyard; his train of thought is, at minimum, haphazard. If you have ever heard a toddler tell a story, it sounds like Trump: digressive, bizarre, filled with tonal shifts, often hilarious. His inner circle exudes a similarly infantile affect. Elon Musk is nothing if not a smirking preadolescent. J.D. Vance looks uncannily like a baby, which is presumably why he decided to grow a beard, with the result that he now looks like a bearded baby. “Let me say very simply,” he told an audience of antiabortion fanatics in his first speech as vice president: “I want more babies in the United States of America!”
It is stressful to be young. The world is confusing, the process of fitting oneself into it long and painful. But these difficulties are offset by certain pleasures, chief among them the relative absence of responsibility. If children misbehave they can be punished, but in moral and legal terms they are not accountable for their actions to the same degree as adults are. In the interview, ABC News’s Terry Moran pointed out that Trump has the power to pick up the phone, call El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, and with the “power of the presidency” get Bukele to release him.
“I could,” Trump replied. “If he were the gentleman that you say he is, I would do that.”
At the most basic level, this destroys one of the Trump administration’s central arguments for leaving Abrego Garcia to rot in an El Salvadoran gulag. Administration officials say they have no power to compel Bukele to release him because it would intrude on Salvadoran sovereignty to dictate that country’s treatment of one of its own.
But Trump just admitted that if he called Bukele and asked him to do this, his fellow dictator would in fact comply. This wrecks the fake distinction upon which Trump has hung his whole argument—the one between compelling Bukele to release Abrego Garcia and merely requesting that Bukele do so.
That phony distinction survives in the MAGA information universe—and in Trump’s head—because it’s insulated inside a propaganda bubble from precisely this sort of questioning from Moran. Here in the real world, of course Bukele would release Abrego Garcia if Trump asked him to. We are paying El Salvador to hold all these prisoners at our request.

I think he wants to be the center of attention. I think that’s probably his principal motivating factor.
I think his approach was once described by [conservative columnist] Charles Krauthammer very well. Krauthammer said that he began by thinking Trump was an 11-year-old. But he realized after a close evaluation that he was about 10 years off: Trump’s really a 1-year-old who just sees everything in the world and asks the question, “What’s in this for me?”
Somebody else, I don’t remember the name, observed that Trump doesn’t have ideas, he has reactions. And I think that’s also an important insight.
If you took all of his decisions in his first term, they’d be a big archipelago of dots; a lot of the dots I agreed with. But if you try to connect the dots…Trump himself couldn’t connect the dots.

President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office have been a gift to a sector of the economy that gets little attention but has enormous social and economic consequences: the US meat industry.
While Congress and both Republican and Democratic administrations tend to do what meat companies want — in part because those companies tend to give a lot of money to politicians and intensively lobby them — Trump has been even friendlier than most.
The one striking exception, of course, are the tariffs, which farm groups have opposed and are already feeling the sting from. The ensuing trade war has reduced two of US agriculture’s most important exports to China: pork and soybeans.
In most other respects, though, the Trump administration has behaved like traditional anti-regulation conservatives. It’s quickly taken a number of actions that directly benefit the meat industry, at the expense of the environment, animals, slaughterhouse workers, and the American consumer.
Here are the six most consequential ones.
1. Speeding up slaughter lines at meat processing plants
Pig slaughter lines are already allowed to process as many as 1,106 hogs per hour, or roughly one pig every 3.2 seconds, while poultry operations are allowed to slaughter up to 140 birds per minute. Yet in March, the US Department of Agriculture announced that it was drafting a rule to allow pig and poultry slaughterhouses to operate even faster.
Labor advocates say the new regulations will further endanger slaughterhouse workers, who already work one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, suffering high rates of injury from the repetitive cuts they must make to animal carcasses for hours on end.
“Increased line speeds will hurt workers — it’s not a maybe, it’s a definite,” the president of the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, which represents over 15,000 poultry workers, said in a press release.
Meatpacking workers are far more likely to be seriously injured than people in nearly every other industry.
Animal advocates also worry about how this will impact the billions of animals that move through US slaughterhouses every year. “With fewer protections and higher pressure, animals will endure even more suffering on the already cruel live-shackle slaughter line,” Michael Windsor of the animal protection group the Humane League told me in an email.
The USDA didn’t respond to an interview request for this story.
2. Rolling back food safety measures
Toward the end of President Joe Biden’s term, his USDA proposed — but didn’t finalize — a rule that would require poultry companies to limit salmonella levels in their products and test raw chicken and turkey for six strains. “If the levels exceeded the standard or any of those strains were found, the poultry couldn’t be sold and would be subject to recall,” according to the Associated Press.
The Biden administration aimed to prevent more than 10 percent of the 1.35 million salmonella infections Americans suffer from each year. But that won’t be happening. The National Chicken Council, the industry’s leading trade group, opposed the rule when it was proposed; in April, Trump’s USDA withdrew it.
3. Gutting the USDA’s animal welfare research department
In February, the USDA shrunk a farm animal welfare research team from five scientists to just one, Sentient Media’s Grey Moran reported.

On June 2, 1919, bombs went off in eight cities across the country. One blew the door off the house of the country’s attorney general, A. Mitchell Palmer, in Georgetown. The government’s response was to round up thousands of foreign nationals, not on charges that they were involved in the bombings but for technical immigration violations and association with communist or anarchist organizations. Writing about the dragnet, Louis Post, who as Acting Secretary of Labor overturned more than a thousand deportation orders arising from the raids, observed that “the force of the delirium turned in the direction of a deportations crusade with the spontaneity of water flowing along the course of least resistance.”
Throughout our history, as I noted in these pages in the early months of Donald Trump’s first term, politicians have found scapegoating noncitizens to be “the course of least resistance.” Noncitizens don’t vote, and citizens rarely object too loudly to derogations of foreigners’ rights. No one has deployed this tactic more aggressively than Trump, who won two unlikely presidential bids by labeling immigrants “criminals” and “rapists.” From the Muslim ban he imposed in his first term to his deployment of the Alien Enemies Act in his second, the president has used broad-brush measures intended only for emergencies to single out noncitizens, not in response to any actual emergency and not for any individual wrongdoing but for mere association with a disfavored country or group. The Alien Enemies Act of 1798 applies only when the US is in a declared war or subject to an “invasion or predatory incursion” by a foreign nation, neither of which is the case here. Trump has nonetheless claimed that the Act permits him to deport suspected members of a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, as “alien enemies” without any process whatever.
But this time the tactic may be backfiring. In the past several weeks Trump has faced substantial resistance from the courts. Federal judges, some of whom Trump himself appointed, have barred his invocation of the Alien Enemies Act and ordered him to facilitate the return of a Salvadoran wrongly deported. So far Trump has not taken the resistance kindly. He flew more than a hundred Venezuelans out of the country without any process even as a federal court was conducting an emergency hearing challenging his authority to do so. Even though his administration admitted that it erroneously deported a citizen of El Salvador, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to that country’s notorious megaprison, Trump has so far balked at making any genuine effort to get him back, despite having been ordered to do so by every judge who has considered the matter: a federal district court, a unanimous court of appeals, and a unanimous Supreme Court.
In his second term Trump has not only sought to exploit “the course of least resistance” as a political matter, by targeting vulnerable individuals who lack widespread popular support. He has also attempted to sidestep or eliminate the legal obstacles the system poses to his desired ends. Speaking in the Oval Office last week, he boasted, “We’re getting them out, and a judge can’t say, ‘No, you have to have a trial.’ The trial is going to take two years. We’re going to have a very dangerous country if we’re not allowed to do what we’re entitled to do.” Or, as White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller put it on social media, “Friendly reminder: If you illegally invaded our country the only ‘process’ you are entitled to is deportation.”

Bondi took the criticism not as a call to clarify what she meant, but as a challenge to go bigger.

“Since you have been in office, President Trump, your DOJ agencies have seized more than 22 million fentanyl pills, 3,400 kilos of fentanyl, which saved—are you ready for this, media?—258 million lives.” Yes, she turned to the camera for the aside to the media.
Yep, that’s math, all right. As for the overnight uptick from 119 million to 258 million lives saved, the spokesman said that the 119 million figure “was in reference to stats that did not include FBI seizures, just the DEA’s.”

Most countries have seen soaring inflation and stagnant or painfully slow economic growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. By many measures, the U.S. is a striking exception to that global trend, with strong growth in GDP and real wages. Some economic metrics are outpacing even pre-pandemic trends.
But just because the U.S.'s economy is performing better than that of many other countries doesn't mean it's in perfect shape or that voters aren't still unhappy with it. As 538 explored earlier this summer, the economic metrics that Americans care about have shifted in dramatic ways since the pandemic. Issues like inflation and the high cost of housing remained at the forefront of the campaign, drowning out Democrats' attempts to highlight other strong economic indicators like increased wage growth and low unemployment.
The few incumbent governments that did manage to hang on this year did so not on the backs of stellar economic performances, but rather through campaigns that focused heavily on security issues. Mexico, Finland, Moldova and the Dominican Republic all saw incumbent parties gain seats or vote share compared to the last election on the backs of concerns over issues like gang violence and Russian encroachment. National security issues simply didn't dominate the U.S. campaign in the same way (though immigration, which often gets lumped in with national security, was a top concern for voters).
Ultimately, the U.S. proved no outlier in the wave of malaise and anger that has toppled incumbents across the globe since the pandemic. Economic anxiety and deep discontent with the direction of the country proved fatal for Democrats, but if trends from this year continue, they have one bright spot on the horizon: Next time, they won't be the incumbents.

Earlier this month, after it became clear that the Trump administration would not be facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a Salvadoran megaprison, I texted a close childhood friend. He’d voted for Donald Trump in each of the past three presidential elections, and I asked for his evaluation. “Trump might be taking it too far,” my friend replied. “But then again,” he added, “he’s a man of action and we wanted change.”
Someday in the future, historians might well point to April 2025 as the first sign of an enduring erosion in Trump’s popular support. In just the first week of this month, America witnessed another mass expulsion of federal workers, in this case from several health agencies, followed by a tariff rollout that sent 401(k)s plunging like a Six Flags log flume. Even with stocks partially rebounding, feedback from riders has not been great for the president: Poll after poll has registered a drop in overall support for Trump, with many voters citing economic uncertainty. Trump’s numbers on immigration, long a strength of his, are also beginning to slip. Another recent survey suggests that Trump has the lowest approval rating of any newly elected president in at least 70 years.
But even as Trump’s critics cheer the apparent change of heart among some of his supporters, they face an inconvenient reality: Many of his voters are jubilant. For these happy millions, the first 100 days of Trump’s second presidency have been a procession of fulfilled campaign promises—and have brought the country not to the precipice of economic ruin or democratic collapse, but to a golden age of greatness. They see Trump as ushering in a new era of action, according to my conversations with several Trump supporters and pollsters in recent days. “Even if they don’t agree with everything he’s doing, he’s doing something, and something is better than nothing,” Rich Thau, the president of the nonpartisan qualitative-research firm Engagious, told me.
Despite the relentless stream of shocking deportation stories—Abrego Garcia; the Venezuelan makeup artist; the Honduran child with Stage 4 cancer—many Trump voters see the president’s handling of immigration as a highlight. The new administration says that ICE has so far carried out 66,000 deportations, a rate that is lower than that of previous administrations but that is partly the result of historically low border crossings.
“It’s a night-and-day difference” from the Biden administration, Ben Cadet, a 24-year-old college student from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, told me. Cadet voted for Joe Biden in 2020 but switched to Trump in 2024, partly because he felt that Democrats had moved too far left and partly because he thought that Biden simply hadn’t done enough to address illegal immigration. Trump’s “immediate action is something I would have appreciated from a Democrat,” he said. In the early days of the new administration, Cadet regularly called a friend to discuss Trump’s executive orders on immigration, foreign policy, and “the culture war,” he told me. The two would joke that they should cancel their Netflix subscriptions and tune in to Trump instead “because watching everything he does is kind of hilarious.”
Thau, who conducts monthly focus groups of swing voters who supported Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2024, told me that half of the participants in any given group cannot name a single thing that Biden achieved while in office. For many of them, the past 100 days—including Trump’s deportations but also his tariffs, reams of executive orders, college shakedowns, and targeting of the political press—have seemed like “an incredible flurry of activity by comparison to the guy who came before,” whom they’d already considered old, infirm, and not really in charge. “I see

"Before Trump came into office, oil production in most U.S. crude regions was set to decline because of maturing fields and dwindling sweet spots. Oil executives expect Trump’s policies to accelerate this trend, including in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, the largest oil field in the country," the report adds.

Donald Trump’s tariffs are making consumer goods more expensive, and he doesn’t want anyone to know it. This week, he phoned Jeff Bezos in a tizzy, furious over a reported Amazon plan to show consumers how much of each product’s price owed to the new tariffs on imported goods. The site allegedly intended to print the figure alongside the list price in an attempt to absolve itself of responsibility for the inevitable price hikes.
After Trump’s call to Bezos, Amazon publicly denied the report, saying that the plan was meant only for its spinoff website Haul—a low-cost competitor to Shein and Temu—and, furthermore, was “never approved and not going to happen.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Tuesday briefing that if Amazon were to publicly list import charges on its goods, it would be a “hostile and political act.”
On this issue, Leavitt has a point. Explicitly tying the cost of goods to trade policy in a way that everyday people can understand is inherently political. And because it would reflect poorly on Trump, highlighting the burden he is placing on U.S. consumers, it would also be a de facto shot against his regime.

I think Trump is losing his way in foreign policy. His peace effort in Ukraine is a charlie foxtrot. Trying to bully Russia into accepting a ceasefire plan that is, for them, existentially unacceptable was never going to work. If I predicted that in 2024, his advisors should have too. The only thing he's gotten out of it is an oil/ gas/ minerals deal that'll probably never generate a revenue stream before the war ends. And since most of the oil and gas is under Russian control, it's doubtful that will ever be accessible to America anyway. And it gives the impression of Trump frantically searching under the couch cushions for spare change.
Since it's doubtful this will EVER add to America's coffers, who is this really mesnt for? Blackrock?

And why did Trump start bombing the Houthis, again? It's not as if we and the Saudis didn't spend years striking the Houthus with missiles before giving up.

Billionaire Elon Musk amplified the post to his 219 million X followers. Neither mentioned the daughter had left her job before Trump’s inauguration.
Loomer continued her attacks with nine more posts in the ensuing days – and more than 600 calls and emails flooded McConnell’s Rhode Island courthouse, including death threats and menacing messages taunting his family, according to a court clerk and another person familiar with the communications.

Speaking during an interview on Fox News, Vance said on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s administration was working to “find some middle ground” to stop a conflict that has been raging for more than three years.
“It’s not going anywhere ... it’s not going to end any time soon,” Vance said.
His comments come shortly after the U.S. and Ukraine signed a long-awaited minerals deal, an agreement that Vance said showed the White House is making progress.
