Not one thing about these new allegations is surprising. The New Yorker, the New York Times, and other media outlets have reported consistently and broadly about Hegseth’s alcoholism and mistreatment of women, as well as his revanchist views about Muslims and frequent, public blackout drinking. There is also an allegation of sexual assault that was never charged but was reported and investigated, around which both parties have signed a nondisclosure agreement. What is, frankly, remarkable about Diettrich Hegseth’s new allegations is that she has affixed her name to them, and that they are in the possession of the FBI and the Senate. All of this would have, in a saner time, ended the nominee’s chances at confirmation. (Hegseth has said he will not drink while serving as secretary of defense if he’s confirmed; his ex-wife Samantha allegedly told the FBI that “He drinks more often than he doesn’t.”)

But what is even more staggering is that in the face of this new information, the decision has been taken by Senate Republicans to discredit it, ignore it, and to charge ahead with a confirmation in spite of it.

Brendan was once a leader in the US white nationalist movement. But when he took the drug MDMA in a scientific study, it would radically change his extremist beliefs – to the surprise of everyone involved. Rachel Nuwer investigates what happened.

In February 2020, Harriet de Wit, a professor of psychiatry and behavioural science at the University of Chicago, was running an experiment on whether the drug MDMA increased the pleasantness of social touch in healthy volunteers. The day was proceeding like any other Tuesday when Mike Bremmer, de Wit's research assistant, appeared at her office door with a concerned look on his face.

The latest participant in the double-blind trial, a man named Brendan, had filled out a standard questionnaire at the end. Strangely, at the very bottom of the form, Brendan had written in bold letters: "This experience has helped me sort out a debilitating personal issue. Google my name. I now know what I need to do."

Seeing this cryptic message, both Bremmer and de Wit were worried. "We really have to look into this," de Wit said. They googled Brendan's name, and up popped a disturbing revelation: until just a couple of months before, Brendan had been the leader of the US Midwest faction of Identity Evropa, a notorious white nationalist group rebranded in 2019 as the American Identity Movement. Two months earlier, activists at Chicago Antifascist Action had exposed Brendan's identity, and he had lost his job.

De Wit was now very worried. She'd just given a drug to a disgraced white supremacist, she realised, and had apparently inspired him to do who knows what out in the world. "Go ask him what he means by 'I now know what I need to do,'" she instructed Bremmer. "If it's a matter of him picking up an automatic rifle or something, we have to intervene."

A murderous spree turned out to be the opposite of what Brendan had in mind. As he clarified to Bremmer, love is what he had just realised he had to do. "Love is the most important thing," he told the baffled research assistant. "Nothing matters without love."

When de Wit recounted this story to me nearly two years after the fact, she still could hardly believe it. "Isn't that amazing?" she said. "It's what everyone says about this damn drug, that it makes people feel love. To think that a drug could change somebody's beliefs and thoughts without any expectations – it's mind-boggling."

Over the past few years, I've been investigating the scientific research and medical potential of MDMA for a book called "I Feel Love: MDMA and the Quest for Connection in a Fractured World". I learnt how this once-vilified drug is now remerging as a therapeutic agent – a role it previously played in the 1970s and 1980s, prior to its criminalisation. If this comes to pass, MDMA – and other psychedelics-assisted therapy – could transform the field of mental health through widespread clinical use in the US and beyond, for addressing trauma and possibly other conditions as well, including substance use disorders, depression and eating disorders.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee recently circulated a draft list of policy options, some of which would help pay for the extension of the expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and set President Donald Trump’s tax policy agenda.

The 50-page document presents an array of policy options that Republicans might consider to help offset the cost of extending some TCJA provisions, which the Congressional Budget Office has estimated would cost $4.6 trillion over 10 years. However, the list does not explicitly say that these are exclusively revenue raisers, and in fact it includes numerous provisions that would instead increase the deficit but represent long-held Republican policy preferences.

Proposals

The list of policy options are set out under 11 by congressional committees – Ways and Means, Energy and Commerce, Agriculture, Education and Workforce, Financial Services, Science, Space and Technology, Natural Resources, Oversight and Government Reform, Judiciary, Homeland Security, Transportation and Infrastructure – and each proposal has been assigned an estimated dollar value representing the savings or costs the change would entail over the 10-year budget window.

The Ways and Means section includes 45 tax proposals, some addressing the same issue. For example, there are two options regarding the corporate tax rate -- lower the rate from the current 21% to 15% (at a $522 billion cost) or to 20% (at a $73 billion cost).

Similarly, the plan considers three options for the state and local tax (SALT) deduction:

• Repeal the SALT deduction, currently capped at $10,000 (but set to expire at the end of 2025), entirely ($1 trillion in savings);
• Make the $10,000 cap permanent, but double it to $20,000 for married couples (($100 billion to $200 billion cost); or
• Cap the SALT deduction at $15,000 for individuals and $30,000 for married couples (($500 billion cost).

The home mortgage interest deduction would be either eliminated (resulting in $1 trillion in savings) or subject to a $500,000 cap mortgage debt, rather than the current $750,000 limit.

Consistent with President Trump’s campaign proposals, the list includes proposals to eliminate income tax and payroll taxes on tips and on overtime wages, at a cost of $106 billion and $750 billion, respectively.

The proposals being considered include the repeal of tax measures introduced under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA):

• The corporate alternative minimum tax, which imposes a 15% tax on some corporations’ adjusted financial statement income (at a cost $222 billion);
• Renewable energy tax credits created or expanded under the IRA, estimated to result in $796 billion in savings. However, the document acknowledges the possibility that “based on political will,” a full repeal may not be feasible, and more limited reform options would be considered.
• IRS enforcement funding, which the document estimates would reduce outlays by $20 billion, but also reduce revenues by $66.6 billion, resulting in a net increase to the deficit of $46.6 billion.
