Now, I have a gripe about this time of year. For the last couple this phrase of "sober curious" has been going around. The younger generation are making it sound like some sort of magical mystery tour. And it's not. In fact staying sober period isn't that hard to do.

Good for the kids though. Get off those smart phones and stay away from liquor and you're probably going to live a happier life.

I know you can't tell an alcoholic anything. That's like trying to get someone to give up smoking. I know that from experience. My mum tried to get my dad to quite smoking didn't work.
I'm glad some of the teenagers may pick up a glass and the college kids and over that aren't so much any more. It's just the phrasing of it that bugs me. Like I said a "Magical Mystery Tour." I am sure there all kinds of reasons that these young people have for staying sober.

Well I think you might be misunderstanding what I'm saying...
Addiction isn't something you can just flip off like a light switch. Wouldn't it be great if life worked that way.

And I realize that too. My dad used to say that some people have to hit bottom before they can approach getting help for an addiction. Then there are others who hit bottom but still won't seek help for it.
Alcohol and drugs are horrible things. I have watched friends and at least one child of a friend almost fall completely into the trap of alcohol. All have managed to pull themselves out of it without any damage. Even my own brother went partway down that rabbit hole but managed to get out. My dad had alcohol kill a brother of his. My mother's family has alcohol destroy lives.
It would be wonderful if we could switch addiction off but that is a long way off if even possible.
