I finally heard an explanation for what happened in Syria that makes sense to me.

Apparently, it was something of an externally paid -for coup.

The story is that Turkiye (and who knows who else, probably Qatar) were secretly paying off Syrian generals and field commanders not to fight. Turkiye and the Syrian army command ... and for all I know, higher political and civil service figures ... had been negotiating in secret for many months. Assad, his family, and some of the loyal Syrian pols and military, were kept in the dark and had no idea this was going on.

This explains why the Syrian army melted away, and why Assad, his family, and some commanders had to be evacuated.

the Mirage 2000 is kind of old now, developed 1970s flying since the 1980s, it still works well as a ColdWar era 4th generation Multirole fighter aircraft. France would provide Mirage 2000 jets and training to Ukraine but maybe the USA have done a better deal with F-16s
