The gigantic budget was wasted on thieves to de-age De Niro. How else can Hollywood people afford to live as they do? They have to steal the money and, because it requires billions per year to maintain their lifestyle, they have to do it by making numerous movies (with at least half the budget stolen) that should never have been made.

Hollywood has always been a crappy place to do business because most of the artists have no talent for telling stories and most of the executives are thieves. It's greed all the time behind the scenes of most movies. Bad motivation almost inevitably must produce a bad product.

A satirical comedy that completely misses the point. Jordan Peele made this film already in "Get Out" and that was an excellent product. This is simply a waste of time in virtually every category imaginable.
Both me and my husband are African Americans. This movie made absolutely no sense. It was definitely not funny. A total waste of our money. We left after 30 minutes couldn't take it anymore.
Good on that last black couple for walking out after 30 minutes. I hope they got their money back.

yes ok the Hollywood blockbuster may take and keep the number 1 spot but so many of the rest of the Top Ten seem to be Chinese, indie Euro indie, HongKong, South Korea tv, Japan cartoon movies...it might be all starting to truly crash down?

I can't really say. I never really started tracking the box office as a whole until last year. And if memory serves, it was a bit later in the year than where we're at in 2024 today. I do remember at the time making remarks about how surprised I was that so many Chinese movies were in the Top 100, but at that point I don't think there were more than a handful of them in the Top 20.
Right now, there is only 40 movies on Bruce's Top 100 list for 2024. That seems particularly low to me 3.5 months into the year, especially when it looks as though 13 of them are Chinese. 4 of them are Russian or some other Cyrillic using nation. And without going deep into detail on all the movies, of the movies that don't have parenthesis with Chinese or Cyrillic text after the title, I know for sure that at least one movie is from South Korea. It's #40 on the list, Alienoid: The Return to the Future.

I think that this is one part fallout from the Writer's and Actor's strikes, and I think it's one part a lot less movies are being made right now after the Writers/Actors got their way.
Hollywood as a whole just doesn't have the volume of movies to put in the theaters that it usually has this time of year. I mean, look at the 9th place movie over the weekend. It was Shrek 2, with $1.35 Million, which was shown in over 1,500 theaters.
I have little doubt that by the end of the year the US won't have the Top 10 movies in 2024. We're far enough into the year where I think YOLO showed us what China is capable of maxing out at for the year when it has very little avenues for showing its movies outside of its borders, and probably just as equally little outside interest.
If I'm wrong about this and Hollywood can't manage to put out 8 more flicks in 2024 that can gross over half a Billion, then yeah.... Hollywood probably is in trouble.

I'm currently in the process of giving the 2023 list an update. The first since January 4th of this year.
I'm about 20 movies deep into the list, and there have been 3 movies that had an adjusted production budget so far. 16 out of 20 movies have had a change in the final worldwide box office numbers.
The only major shift so far has been that Oppenheimer raises to 7 on the list and Barbie falls to 8th place because The-Numbers now reports that the production budget was $151 Million instead of $145 Million, and that was enough to make the two swap places based off the Budget/WW Gross ratio.
It should get more interesting once I start getting to the Disney movies, but they were all so low on the list in 2023 that I haven't got to one of them yet.
Not sure when I'll get around to the painstaking process of updating the list here in the original thread, but I'll make another post here when I've gotten around to changing it.
This will be my last update for the 2023 movies. At this point, I don't care if some numbers change a little bit here and there. I think I've given them plenty of time to get their shit together 7 months after 2023 was over. I'm just not going to spend the next 2 years making tiny edits to the final Worldwide Box Office numbers.
I'm not sure when I'll get around making 2024 charts. I'm not in any big hurry simply because of how much time and effort it takes constantly updating them as the year goes on and new movies come out. Maybe I'll do the first one in December.

I have no desire to work on updating anything on this site now, but there's a few interesting things to note now that my spreadsheets for 2023 are done...
Disney did not lose as much as I thought they did. As of the January 4th update, they were down only $1.5 Billion and change. Even though Wish and The Marvels were major flops, they both did bring in a few hundred million combined before New Years and I'd forgotten about that.
However, my list only had the original $300 Million budget for Indy 5. I know that budget was raised to something like $360 at some point, but I'd never updated that. It gets even worse now, because if you look at The-Numbers the budget for Indy 5 was a staggering $402.5 Million!!!! (I could be wrong, but I think that has to be the record for the most expensive movie ever made).
That movie alone, lost over $611 Million for Disney.
But both The Marvels and especially Wish did make more money after new years, so when all of that is factored in together Disney "only" lost slightly over $1.7 Billion in 2023.
As far as other Disney movies having higher budgets, I've heard people say it over the last year, but according to the-numbers Indy 5 was the only one that changed. I go by what The-Numbers says above any source in my records, so until Bruce changes any of that, those budgets for The Marvels and The Little Mermaid remain unchanged from last update.
The most interesting change in my opinion?
Sydney Sweeny's rom-com "Anyone But You" which was released on December 23rd, 2023 had a run all the way until April 18th, 2024. On a paltry $25 Million budget, it ended up grossing $219,589,175 worldwide. I don't have the chart up in front of me right now, but this was something in the area of 815% of the production budget and propelled it from 47th place on January 4th to 9th place for the entire year. And since Barbie was knocked down to 8th place, that means it was almost as successful as Barbie was on the Production Budget vs. Worldwide Gross chart. It came in above Saw X which took 10th place.
Honestly, I'd forgotten this movie even existed and I don't think I gave it another thought after adding it as one of the last few NEW movies on the 2023 list on my January 4th update.
No wonder Sydney Sweeny wasn't sweating the Madame Web losses and was going on shows like SNL to make fun of it. At the same time that she was taking a back seat in one of the largest flops of 2024, she was was the co-lead in one of the biggest success stories in 2023.
Madame Web came out nearly 2 months after Anyone But You, and both ended their theater runs on the same day, April 18th.
Amazing what happens when you put a body like that in a bikini instead of covering it up in a Girl Power trash flick run by a bunch of "weird" lesbian man hating cat ladies.

Again, I haven't done any figuring for 2024 movies yet I'm writing this, but without even doing the math on current year movies, I believe that Anyone But You would have been the highest movie on the list in 2024 when it comes to Production Budget vs. Worldwide Gross. The closest right now, I believe, would be the $1.5 Billion Inside Out 2 which currently sits just a little above 750% of its $200 Million production budget. Despicable Me 4 is at 687% of its $100 Million budget. Time will tell how much Deadpool & Wolverine makes above its $200 Million budget.
It really is a shame it was released in late December instead of early January since 90% of its run was in early 2024.
As it is now, based just on worldwide gross alone, had this movie come out two weeks later and been counted as a 2024 release, it would be the 17th highest grossing movie of the year, including the 5 Chinese movies that would be above it. Last year it ended up 35 on that list.
There are only 2 non-Chinese movies that rank higher for Worldwide Gross that cost less than $100 Million to make. Garfield ($60 Million) and A Quiet Place: Day One ($67 Million). And they've only made in the area of 300% to 400% of their production budgets. The other 9 non-Chinese movies that rank higher on the list currently all cost anywhere from $100 Million to $200 Million to make, or anywhere from 4 to 8 times what Anyone But You cost.
That's extraordinary for a Rom-Com, especially since that genre has fallen so deeply out of favor in recent years. The only other Rom-Com I'm aware of that came out in 2023 was Jennifer Lawrence's movie No Hard Feelings, which made $83,453,541 worldwide on a $45 Million budget. It took 79th place last year on the Top 100 list Worldwide and lost over $29 Million for Sony Pictures.
