Maybe you should make a Hollywood 1962 thread?

Migration is the little movie that could.

I haven't been paying much attention to the 2023 movies that are still in the box office since I decided I wouldn't update the numbers on this thread until they were all out of the theater.

It took 3rd place on Monday behind Bob Marley and Madame Web and above Argylle and Wonka.

It's added another $80 Million to its global total in the last 33 days since I made that post above.

A nice little profit of $75 Million extra for Universal's 2023 total right there, which is great for them considering that it opened in the US with only $12.3 Million, which was the worst Illumination Entertainment box office out of its 14 movies. It had a really staggered global schedule, and it only opened in 13 markets outside of the US that weekend, adding only another $6.5 Million for a grand total of $18.8 Million on opening weekend.

$18.8 Million compared to its $72 Million production budget was only 26%. I don't have all the data in front of me right now, but I don't even need to in order to say that this the record in 2023 for a comeback on a movie. I'm pretty sure that there wasn't another movie in 2023 that earned less than 70 to 80% of its budget on opening weekend that ended up breaking even. And not only did it eventually do that but it's still hitting number 3 in the box office several months later and it's now grossed 356% of its production budget.

Congrats again to 2023 Universal.

2024 Universal needs to get its shit together quick.

No. It's not the number one movie in the world.

It's been in 11th place in the box office since Thursday of last week. It was 10th place on Valentine's Day.

It has currently grossed $100 Million on a $36 Million budget, or 278% of the budget. Currently it has made $10 Million for Paramount Pictures.

Apparently it's not to difficult for them when the movie is worth watching.

As stated before (and not what you quoted), Migration has come from a very poor opening weekend of only 26% worldwide and now has made 356% of its production budget, which is a profit of $75 Million on its 60th day in the theaters for Universal. It's still doing well enough 60 days from release to be taking 3rd place in the box office, only behind the two large releases last weekend. Most of the time it's been making this money was long after the pirates released it for free.

Wonka has made $605 Million on a $125 Million budget, or 484% of its production budget and a $292.5 Million profit for Warner Bros. during its 67 day run in the box office.

But thanks yet again for making my point for me.

Hollywood just needs to make good movies and stop making movies for you Lefty Communist weirdos on Twitter that screech the loudest and never actually pay to see any of the movies that they cave and make for you.

Migration is now just over $200k shy of $270 Million worldwide. If it doesn't make that tonight, it will on Friday.

That's now 375% of its $72 Million budget.

I do believe that when I finalize the 2023 numbers that Migration will be the comeback movie of the year after its abysmal opening weekend.

"The biggest screens show the biggest blockbusters, and the smaller screens show other films. What has been happening is they show the same shit on all the screens. I think that will change. I'm positive."

The "Dune" movies are the latest Hollywood tentpoles starring Skarsgåard, who appeared in several Marvel movies as "Dr. Erik Selvig." His most recent MCU appearance was in 2022's "Thor: Love and Thunder." When asked about recent Marvel box office disappointments and if he thinks movies like "Dune" and "Oppenheimer" mean creativity is being restored in the big budget movie, the actor answered: "I do, in a way."

"Those films you named made a lot of money, so it makes the studio heads courageous," Skarsgåard said. "But it only takes one flop to make them scared again. The thing is, it takes a lot of talent to make an ‘Oppenheimer' or a ‘Dune,' and we can't produce that much talent enough to have 100 releases like that each year. But I think the cinema will survive."

"They will go back to how the multiplex was intended to be," he added. "The biggest screens show the biggest blockbusters, and the smaller screens show other films. What has been happening is they show the same shit on all the screens. I think that will change. I'm positive."

I'm in full agreement with him. That is a good article.

I'd also add that budgets need to come down by a huge margin. All we hear about is how the Hollywood Actor isn't a thing anymore, so there is no reason any of them should be making $10 Million or $20 Million or $50 Million to star in a movie when that means the movie needs to make $25 Million to $125 Million more just to break even on their salary.

I'd suggest points on the back end. I know Hollywood doesn't want to do that because they want to own everything, but the quality of cinema will increase drastically if they were to incentivize residuals for a job well done. (Not just the actors, but EVERYONE involved). Even if it is a temporary thing that fizzles out after a few years of streaming and the rights revert back to the studios as they always do. But no more of this tens of millions of dollars shit for any actors up front.

You make a good movie that people want to see, you get paid. If you make crap that nobody wants to see, time to find a different career path. Easy peasy.

Also, we have such a huge library of great movies from the past that has been accumulated, we should be seeing more of them in the theaters again. I'm glad to see that this has started to be a thing post-Covid lockdowns, but it should be much more regular.

The correct budget for many movies would be zero. Most movies should not be made. The best recent example is Killers of the Flower Moon.

Production Budget: $200,000,000 (worldwide box office is 0.8 times production budget)
https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Killers-of-the-Flower-Moon-(2023)#ta
b=summary

Killers started with one script, which was scrapped and then rewritten for Leonardo DiCaprio to move from the star's expanded role in the first script to the star's newly expanded role in the second script so that he remains the star. His pay stays the same: $30 million. Killers should have remained as only a book, not a movie. The fundamental idea behind the true story is mass murder for money and how slow the FBI is to convict obvious criminals who are piling up bigger and bigger heaps of money, one murder after another. A better movie would be one where the real story was rewritten for the victims to bypass the FBI and, instead, shoot DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the head. That is a murder movie that would be profitable and far cheaper to film.

That's too oversimplified though. A lot of those movies were made before, but on shoestring budgets. Some of them even ended up being quite good because of the passion behind the project.

I'm glad to see that smaller companies are making good indie flicks again. Everything, Everywhere All At Once was made by A24 for only $25 Million and it was quite enjoyable. And I'll never miss an opportunity to plug 2009's Ink. That movie was written by a guy you never heard of, produced by him and his wife who you've also never heard of and starred a bunch of people you never heard of. It only cost $250,000 to make, which was 1/100th of the cost of EEaaO, and in my opinion it's one of the best movies I've ever seen.

To this day, nobody knows where $200 Million went.

It's a great example, but it's not the most recent example. Argylle cost the same $200 Million to make and it's extremely likely it doesn't crack $100 Million worldwide. Killers at least managed to gross $156 Million. I believe The Marvels lost more money for Disney too because of its budget of at least $275 Million.

None of these movies should have cost more than $50 Million to make. One of them still would have lost the studio money, but the other two would have at least made some profit.
